Hope someone can help me here.

I have an ADSL connection at work. I want to add a normal 56k dialup modem onto my PC.
Then i want to configurte my home PC to be able to dial into my work PC via 56k modem and access the Work PC and the work PCs ADSL connection.
My questions are two:

1: how do i configure this? im not good at networking so if someone can help me with a step by step guide ill really be thankful

2: Will my calls from home to my Work PC be regarded as free TELKOM CLOSER calls as im not dialling into an ISP so TELKOM should not count it as Internet calls....?or do they monitor anything thats DATA and charge for it? If they are charging, then i dont need the info on how to setup networking as its a waste in that case...

Please help

Can't help with point 1 but point 2 is that you'll be charged at non-data rates. I use a RAS (Remote Access Service) connection (which is what you want to do) and the calls a billed per normal voice tariffs.

Hi Mams, going to PM you a 56k dialup username and password. this can be used on the SAIX network. Use SAIX Krugersdorp no. 011 950 2000.
Due to so many people moving over to ADSL we have 56k dialups available @ no cost,
You can signon at www.webadmin.co.za with your dialup details to create emails for yourself or change passwords.

On a security note - if you work for a corporate you will get shot for doing something like that :) You bypass all firewalls and open your network up to being hacked via dialup.

If you need to use dialup your better off setting up the call back option - but then work will be paying for the dial back connection and they might notice those 12 hour long phone calls :)

Update: If you have free calls afterhours, why not just dialup directly to an ISP?

The free calls on the closer plan does not apply to dialing into your ISP.

"Telkom CLOSER only applies to normal fixed line calls and excludes Internet dial-up calls."

How they check this is the question. Do they have a list of all ISP telephone numbers or do they actually have a way of monitoring each phone line to see whether it is carrying Internet data? I very much doubt if it's the latter.

i still need help with this one...how do i dial into my work PC?
the work PC is my own business so im not gonna get into trouble.
what must i configure on my work pc to accept calls from laptop and what do i configure on my laptop?

@ Mams : assuming that you have an ADSL modem on your work's PC :

1. Run the New Connection Wizard to accept incoming VPN connections. (at work)

2. Download and install an utility that will allow you to "bind" your dynamic IP to an URL - my preferred choice is www.dyndns.org - this way you can type in mywork.homeftp.net (for example) without having to memorize (or find) your public IP. (at work)

3. On your laptop (home) you set up a VPN connection (using the New Connection Wizard), then you dial in to the SAIX system, then you connect with the VPN dial-up connection.

Do keep in mind that you "expose" your PC (and confidential data) to the Internet this way - I don't trust Windows Firewall completely.

Also, keep in mind that Telkom may detect that you're using a data call and bill you accordingly.

Regards

Libs

PS : if you need more info on what to do and so on, PM me and I'll post the info on what steps you must take here.

Because calls to an ISP aren't free, only "voice" calls are.

How they check this is the question. Do they have a list of all ISP telephone numbers or do they actually have a way of monitoring each phone line to see whether it is carrying Internet data? I very much doubt if it's the latter.

They have a list of numbers, its used for their "Surfmore" or whatever its called package too, seen them on the website before.

Hi Mams, I believe I managed to do exactly what you have in mind some time ago. Hope I still got all the peaces together and don't leave anything out.

First of all, the Computer with the ADSL connection must be running WinXP. Even though windows ME has function for incoming connection, I could not get it to work. Actually I used WinXP pro so the standard home edition might not work either, don't know.

Make sure the modem on the work PC is installed and functioning properly before you begin. Go to Network Connections from control panel. Click on Create a new connection. A Wizard will pop up.
  • Click Next
  • Select Set up advanced connection.
  • Select Accept incoming connections
  • Select your modem
  • Not sure here, think it was Do not allow VPN
  • Click on add user and enter a user name and password. This is the user name and password you will use on the machine that do the dial-up.
  • Networking software - All should be OK here, just click next.
  • And then click Finish.

That should do the trick. Think internet connection sharing must be enabled on work PC and you must make sure modem is powered up when you boot the PC. If you switch modem on after boot, then it does not answer the incoming call.

On the PC that will be making the connection, simply create a standard ISP type dial-up connection using work phone number and user name and password as above.

As for security, I don't know much, this worked for me, but probably not the safest thing to do. Only played with it once to see if it would be possible.

Remember modem to modem connection can only reach a maximum of 33.6kbps, so don't expect a fast connection.

Hope that helps.
