Okay so here is a strange one. I have a few neighbors, who would like to use my internet, and contribute to it monthly. How would such a setup actually work, and would it be possible, without actually killing my connection or other complexities it might incur

would it be advisable to do such a thing, and if the answer is it can be done, please explain what i should do to get it working smoothly, safely and in the best interest of all parties concerned.

what are the risks etc, as it was a strange request, but something that made me thinking

so in a nutshell, as in a work environment, something like guest passwords etc, shared connections and so on

again, its a strange request which just took me by surprise

You are technically not allowed to share the interwebz wirelessly .... legal rubbish... but what you do under the radar . Personally I wouldn't share my connection, I want my full speed!

What's your line speed and how many people will be using the line?

Also, have a read through this and see if you still want to be so generous

You'll start hating your neighbours unless you have fibre, a single ADSL connection is barely enough for one household never mind multiple. Rather persuade them to install their own and offer to help if they're a bit technologically challenged.

I recently got a Asus modem. That has 'guest' wireless networking capabilities. And on that network you can actually set the maximum speed they are allowed to connect to and block certain websites etc. We use it at the office for when clients want to connect to the internet etc without someone hogging all our bandwidth.

basically im not keen on it, so dont get me wrong. I was merely just wanting to find out these type of things, as im well aware of various factors which might cause issues.

The only proper way to do it would be the use a proxy and limit the connection to 50%. So you get 50% and they get 50%. (That is if you are going halves)

Not really viable unless you have a decent internet speed with lots of data.

Also bear in mind when they have internet issues they will be phone you to sort out.

I would just tell them to get their own internet.

yep, i agree. Seems way too much of trouble to even consider it. on a seperate note, is there a way to get an ISP to commit to some sort of wifi as what MWEB once did, where they install and handle everything? im curious to know this.

Only if your wireless signal goes over a public road. The legal rubbish is quite clear, lol.

As for the other comments, you can setup something simple like a Raspberri Pi with IPCop installed that you route traffic through. It should allow you to shape their connections and manage the speed effectively where a neighbour doing torrents won't saturate the line at all (because torrents are your enemy here, not normal web surfing or quick downloads)

The setup would cost you minimally or if you have a PC lying around doing nothing, turn it into a proxy/router with IPCop (or something similar)

Quite easy to do, you can even allocate "caps" for them, so if you have an uncapped line, just make them pay per gig or per 10 gig or whatever

Don't do that. You'll pay through the nose

If it was me, I won't do it, simply because of the hastle and trouble with the neighbours, it's the same as sharing DSTV or a borehole with a neighbour, there will be endless issues, probably endless fights, not even mentioning some of them deciding to stop paying. Kindly advise them to get their own internet.
