How to find distance from exchange?

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I am looking to buy a new house, and I am currently DYING on 0.8 down/0.3 up after returning from the UK with 50mb fibre. I want to ensure the place I move into has the right infrastructure to support the fastest speed internet possible! As ridiculous as this sounds, this will be a determining factor for the property I purchase, as I work from home in an online capacity.

Any way I can check distances from exchange or a map of all Johannesburg exchanges, and even better if there was a way to check "real" speeds experienced by customers in certain areas?

Is not difficult to find a exchange close by. The question is "will the exchange have ADSL ports available?" and "will the exchange be reliable?".
I read many post of exchanges with ADSL ports full (like benoni) and also ADSL lines constantly going dead because of rain.

If you can afford, I would go straight for fibre or a wireless connection.

It all depend how much you want to spend. For example, Neotel can give you 1mpbs FIBRE for R1600 excl. Some people can say... but is 1Mbps... but that fibre connection is ROCK SOLID. Never goes down and you have low contentions. Also neotel have direct access to most international links (seacom, wacs, sat3, etc).
I know that Neotel was deploying FTTH (fibre to the home) around Sandton. Not sure if they are supplying fibre to other areas.
If fibre is not possible, maybe look into a WISP company. They can give you almost a "tailored" solution that can be easily upgradeable at any time. If you have the money, you can also contact www.eoh-ns.co.za in order to get a decent solution as they can supply you with wireless or fibre. These guys (EOH-NS) are "corporate", but if you have the money, why not?

Also the guys from WiFibre (www.wifibre.co.za) been expanding their coverage quite quickly and so far the guys have received good comments in the wi-fi forum. Kawuleza also is a decent option as a home wireless connection (www.kawuleza.com).

Make an appointment to see your Telkom regional manager as well as a Telkom business sales executive

DONE !

Why stuff around ?
 
Looking at the list Bloemwater jumps out. Is it a case of utility liaison and using some of their wayleaves or is Telkom getting itself into the business of monopolising water? :p
It could bundle quite well: 50kl of water, 500megs 3G data, 3 hours talk time ...

Mind you having a water supply could be useful if you want to house an OOBShark

Plenty of liaison between the different utility folks to prevent damaging each other's property!
 
^sadly looking at two of the lists I notice a lack of ECNOs (if that is actually a coherent idea) other than Telkom - aren't other guys laying capital?
