Hi, am wondering if any of the Vodacom members can help.

A friend of mine is going to the UK for just over a month starting in December.

Now apparently one cannot get roaming activated on a family top-up. So is there any way she could get roaming, say perhaps by purchasing a prepaid SIM meant only for that purpose or something? Or is the only option to buy a SIM in the UK.

Surely Vodafone or someone has a way?

EDIT: Sorry if this has been asked before. I had a quick look around only as I am at work and not keen on browsing around...ye I know shame on me :p

Go Here...

I dont know who told you you cant roam on the Top-Up in UK. AFAIK, the only thing you cant roam with on Prepaid is Data.

And with Contracts, AFAIK, the contract needs to existing for 6 months, and Roaming can only be activated on the 7th Month, and the cost involved is like (R5000). Dont know if the same applies for Top-Up becoz its a Hybrid between a Contract and Prepaid.

Well I was actually after roaming on Data more than Voice as that would be favourable. So as she has family top-up then there is no way on Vodacom with what she has got or can get at no considerable expense? I mean we are talking about a student here lol so R5000 is a bit offsides.

It'll work out much cheaper to get a UK sim, if she's going to be there for a month. You've got the added hassle of getting one, of course, so you can't start phoning people from the airport, but it will work out cheaper.

Like i said, i dont know if its the same for Top-Up, becoz its a Hybrid.

But if its handled as a normal prepaid, then she wont be able to do Data, only Voice and SMS.

So ja, i agree with Cathryn (And i advise most of the customers i get) to get a SIM there for the period she is there.

On voice/SMS she can get roaming in the UK on Family top-up.

For data, she should go into an Orange shop with her cellphone and they will give her a pre-paid SIM card for free if she buys £10 airtime. Then she can buy 1-day bundles (called "Orange Extras") for £1, allowing unlimited 3G/GPRS usage until midnight, but only on the phone, not for a PC.
