I've recently started learning Java, but it seems there aren't many clear guides to help a beginner. So in this guide I will instruct you on how to install the Java Development Kit, and an IDE, also I will link you to a good clear tutorial.

Installing the JDK:
First off you must download and install the Development kit. Make sure you install the correct file for your system!

Go to this link: here. Then in the " Java SE Development Kit 7u51" box, select the correct system and download the file, then just run it and go through the setup wizard.
This is if you want to find and select your own IDE(The editor you write and compile programs in). If you want to use Netbeans, my preferred editor, go to this link, it is the Java development kit and Netbeans rolled into one download. This will probably be easier. Once you've installed your IDE it should be ready to go. But be warned, I installed the JDK for Windows x64, with Netbeans, I cannot speak for other systems and IDEs, If you have any trouble consult your IDE website.

Learning Java:

After you have setup Java, it's time to learn how to use it, I find "An Introduction to programming using Java" by David J. Eck to be the best beginner guide, it will teach you the fundamentals of programming and Java.

I hope you found this guide useful! If I've made any mistakes, feel free to point them out.

Those are great links, the reason I started in Java is to move on to Android app development. Team Treehouse looks great but seems a bit expensive...
