Hi,

I work abroad and visit SA once a year. I don't use the SA phone at all in Asia, everytime I come back I had to register for a new number. It's quite a hassle updating my SA number to everyone, anyone know how to keep my SIM active while I am abroad? Thanks

I think that you have to have a "billable" transaction every 90 days or they see the number as inactive. simply pop the sim into your phone once every two months and send your mom or someone an sms or quick phone call, problem solved. Maybe even buy R5 worth of airtime.

I had the same problem for my mom until it became so cheap to roam with her Australian network that we no longer bothered to keep her Vodacom number active.

I can't find it now on their site, but they have (had) a prepaid sim that you pay upfront some amount and they guarantee that the sim will be active for a year. Maybe email customer care to find out?

Otherwise get a Vodacom 4U zero subscription contract sim. Contract sims don't expire.

A cheap airtime only topup SIM is an option, the idea to enable SMS roaming and send an SMS every couple of months is also a good idea.

The method with the least headaches will be to get the cheap contract. If you slip up once and forget to SMS or phone and the number expires. With MTN topup unused airtime will roll over 5 times before expiring, not sure how long unused Vodacom airtime will last.

Was called the prepaid passport voucher that you could load onto your sim giving you R265 airtime and a 2 year airtime window. Personally I would put it on roam and send an sms every now and again or get an el cheapo contract as you suggest.
