How to KILL GRUB (It keeps returning after reboot)

Hey guys, I need to fix this problem seriously urgently. Anyway I have two hard disks, one IDE 80Gig (which I install OS's onto) and my Sata 250Gig (Backups)

Anyway I had Vista installed on the 80Gig and I decided to install Fedora linux, so shrank Vista partition etc and installed Fedora on the 80 Gig as well.

Somehow grub did not see Vista bootloader and after struggling for hours to repair etc (remove grub etc)... I decided to format my entire 80 Gig drive and install Vista again. Which I did fine but every time I reboot I get a broken grub.

So I repair the Vista bootloader (using Vista DVD) and it works. Vista boots and then afterwards if i reboot again back to grub.

How on earth do I kill grub, I mean a complete format didn't... Please help!

I don't know much about Vista bootloader, with XP you can format the MBR with the FIXMBR command from recovery console.

Download Ranish Partition Manager...

http://www.ranish.com/part/

and put it onto something bootable...

http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/

Boot with it.. .and start Ranish

Click on the disk you want to "fix"

load the standard boot IPL and then save your changes (F2)

Voila, the grub will be gone.

You can also get Ranish as part of Hiren's Boot CD...

http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

or the Ultimate Boot CD...

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I suggest the latter, cos it is smaller and easier to get hold of.

Hey bro, thanks if it doesn't work I will try this method. I am hesitant because I did a lot to my vista install before I released the problem. So I don't want to reinstall again unless I really have two;)

Just be careful with most of these tools that you don't accidentally delete your partition and then save the changes!!!

Yes, I have done that

but fortunately there are also partition undelete tools out there also! :)

Hiren's Boot CD is a GREAT tool to have! If you can find it on some of the filesharing services... it should be on our local news server.

Well I managed to eventually kill grub but I however seemed to have destroyed the hard-disk as well. :-( so instead of having both my 80gig and 250gig I am now stuck with only my 250gig disk.

Ahh geez what can I say?

I read up with vista you have to do something like /fixboot and then /fixmbr. Dont know if that works or if you tried it.
But boot sectors can be a pain, that is why my windowsxp runs on an ide drive and my linux runs on a sata drive, so ni the bios, I can boot up from sata and use grub to get to both disks, or just boot to ide and only get windowsxp

Hi there, yes before I damaged my 80gig IDE drive I tried both options and neither would work. Hopefully I can rescue the 80gig drive and use it for backups etc.

when you ran fixmbr, did you do fixmbr c:? I once had a similar issue with XP. The problem was that it was writing MBR to the boot sector of the partition instead of the boot sector of the drive. I think I fixed by using the XP relative drive path (see your boot.ini for that)

Although this might all be academic given that you can't see your 80GB HDD.

When the drive worked I did all of that, why I could not remove grub when the drive worked I will never know. However siince the drive is dead and useless, it doesn't matter anymore:eek:
