Is it possible to link 2 AP's of different brands ( linksys + Dlink) with a bridging router of a third brand (planet)

I've got 1 of each each and I want to setup a wide coverage wlan.!
I've set the linksys and the dlink to access point mode and the planet in multi point mode. Is this correct????

But I cant seem to connect or ping the other computers that are attached to the multi-point link (planet) or the dlink access point, dunno why?

Any tips on multi-pont bridging ap's would be great

Thanks alot

are you even sure the AP's are linked ? Can you ping each of the AP's from the linksys ?

I think that the Dlink(DWL-1000ap+) is skrewed! FFS! Wasted 15 hours of trying to configure it correctly.

But lets say for agruements sake that they all worked fine. Would I have to do any major reconfiguring of the routers? Or would putting 2 of them into AP mode and 1 into multi-point bridge mode be enough to do the trick?

I assume that they would all have to have the same SSID and Channel? right?
The linksys doesnt say anything about entering the MAC address of another router but the Dlink does..? The linksys (wrt54g v5) has only 2 modes "router" and "gateway" I've considered updating the firmware but to scared of "bricking" it.

Am I being to technical or is it the broken Dlink piece of carp!?

Only the SSID or ESSID need to be the same, you can select any random channel, in fact it's better to use different channels as interference is reduced.

i was talking about the access points pinging each other, not the computers.

come join us in irc or pm/email me some contact details, I would really like to help. (provided nothing to do with wisp rubbish/attempted wisp)

lol! Its for setting up a Wlan between a few friends!

I'll come and have a chat in IRC soon!

thanks

This wont work.

All your Radios are in AP mode.

Clients can connect to AP.
AP can only accept connections from Clients. (ie: cannot connect to other APs)

There is an additional protocol, called WDS, which will allow an AP to "connect" to another AP, but I doubt the radios that you have support that.

can you list the makes/model numbers..... maybe someone has used the hardware before.

Linksys wrt54g v5 Dlink DWL-1000ap+

The Dlink supports :ap , repeater , multi point bridge; wireless client and wireless bridge!

The linksys only supports AP and gateway ( so basic ) I have alrdy downloaded dd-wrt micro but I havnt flashed my firmware yet because I wanted to avoid that!

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks

You can link two AP's depending if they support WDS (Wireless Distribution Service) They need to be on the SAME channel and your WEP must be either Open <--- NO NO or shared key.

You will then have to add the two AP's MAC addresses in the WDS section of your AP setup (once again depending if they support this) on each reffering to the other.

I have successfully set this up using three AP's (Senao) 54Mg connections with a 70-73% link rate over 10+km.

a couple of problems with WDS tho:
1. WDS may be incompatible between different products (even occasionally from the same vendor  ) as it is not certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
2. that throughput in this method is inversely proportional to the number of "hops", as all traffic uses the same channel. For example, client traffic going through one relay station before it reaches the main access point will see at most half the maximum throughput that a directly connected client would experience.

So using 3 senao units it should work, but using different makes of AP's you are not guaranteed wds will work.

does wds support an infinite amount of connected ap's???

Thanks

i guess the only limit would be the number of blocks to enter in the MAC addresses of the other ap's on the WDS page. but best to only use wds if you have too... if you can get it to work 100%.

hey dont diss wds, 'back in the days' it gave us a reasonable connection from tableview to plattekloof, it was +- 2mbps down and 1mbps up :p
