In a "lab" setup I have done 20 AP's running WDS Mesh with RSTP using Routerboard 532's. At close range 5 - 10 mbps was not unusual and broadcast traffic was minimal using RSTP.

now routerboards running mikrotik are in another league. You can't compare them to wrt54gl and dlink ap's.

Wow 20 ap! but alas i dnt have any routerboards!!

The theoretical limit on wds would be 127 AP's. That could never actually work in practice though.
