Samsung Dex setup

I have a USB hub that does 4K @60Hz, but I had to install Good Lock to enable that feature. I don't think DeX will support dual monitors as yet.

it does - the phone screen is one monitor and the second second screen you connect to is the second monitor - you can get the mouse cursor to move from one screen to the other PLUS my USB hub on the previous page is one that is full of next gen connectivity and it has two HDMI ports - it can support 8k at 30hz plus 4k at 60hz OR 2 x 4k at 60Hz and the multi monitor mode is built into the hub - all you need to do is use the two HDMI ports on the hub ..... as a recap here is a link to the USB hub that i have so what i am after is to see if Dex supports triple screen (yes i know its ambitious but if it doesn't work at worst i will have the the same ABB configuration that an Apple Mac supports vs the ABC configuration i am after)

USB Hub (clickable link)

so i can link the hub to the 15.6" monitor off one HDMI port and then link it to my 55" TV off the other HDMI port and it should work as long as my 100watt PD power bank is connected to the hub power port at the same time  and it will give video to both the screens - as they say in the video diagram in the post above this one an Apple Mac will only duplicate the two additional screens (SST instead of MST) - windows will do it as a triple screen setup - just want to test if Dex does the triple screen too or if it will work only as the Apple stuff does

also remember if you are outputting 4k onto a full HD 1080p monitor if things work correctly it will just downscale and play at 1080p on that monitor but the 4k monitor will play the full 4k res

okay - the last hour or two i "borrowed" the HDMI cable from my TV box and ran the above experiment since that cable is more modern and higher spec than my high end A/V setup HDMI cables - sadly the hub or DEX does not allow for the triple monitor setup - i need to run the same Hub into my laptop using a "reverse" OTG cable ie USB to female USB-C and then connecting the hub to the laptop (i do have that convertor) and then running HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 to the different monitors and checking to see if this gives video output - will take a lot longer to do this so i will do it at some other time and check if windows does allow for triple screen ie laptop plus second 15.6" screen plus 55" TV to do ABC

right now though from the phone and DEX i can only do ABB and the 4k TV actually drops down to 1080p resolution and just clones what the 15.6" monitor does (its easier to work with the 15.6" monitor because of the touch screen) but the ABB setup is not a bad thing because its the same as what an Apple Mac can mange to muster up 😉 BUT you can't win em all so its okay and i'm still happy that the phone does things that my older PC cannot do

Yes, I am referring to triple monitor support. That is, a DeX device and two external monitors. The flow between the tablet and single external monitor works fine. I tested 4K resolution with Googlock, and it does work. Otherwise, it defaults to 2K.

yeah - i did the 4k on one single monitor ie to my 55" TV and it works there too as per post #33 of this thread - but i really wanted the MST to work ie give me screens ABC but it just gives me screens ABB and while the 15.6" monitor is plugged me it tells me that the Dex res has been adjusted for the monitor that is connected and then even the second monitor plays at 1080p instead of 4k - when i remove the 15.6" monitor and have only the 55" TV connected then the 4k works perfectly again

as i said though i want to see of that ABC works with the USB hub connected to the laptop BUT i'm not sure if it does external video from USB-A on the laptop - so i will tinker with that some other time - otherwise if i really want triple screen to work from the hub then i need a laptop with a USB-C data port also included ..... but i'm not going to buy a new laptop now

I think that's a bandwidth limit of the USB-C on the phone for HDMI. As far as I can tell, based on reading quite a few Reddit and forum posts, you can achieve 4K at a maximum of 60 Hz to one external monitor only at a time. But I'm also testing and researching to find out if there are any other solutions.

Interesting thread and thanks for the info.

Anybody tried Leena Desktop, Mira and Taskbar for other Android phones?

I have one of these...

Was meant to switch between my personal laptop, work laptop and gaming PC. However, the gaming PC is currently on hold...

in the meantime using one of these

i can run my S23 FE in Dex using my mouse, keyboard and headset or external speakers. You dont get extended display... it will show on both displays but mirrored. Not a big deal for me tho.

I want to try using it with a game controller for some ZZZ... will report back

yeah from Dex it seems to only run mirrored ..... as you say its no biggie - i did not really need it - just tried it cos it seemed like a fun thing to do and i was bored 😉

yeah as far as i know Dex doesnt support it... but we might get there eventually.

if i had my way i would have no wifi in my house and just have a dex station where ever someone would NEED to access the internet.

Dex is very changed in One UI8 - i was able to get high resolution to work via Multstar in Good lock after updating good lock but there are no more settings for the resolutions of the monitors so i'm not sure if those actually self detect and apply - but on my TV it can still work at 4k res ie 3840 x 2160

and those stupid home screen icons also don't want to go back to the edges - so i'm not sure if i have to reset the grids and grid sizes in Good lock so i just hid all app icons in the home page because they land up blocking my picture that i use as a wallpaper either way i can get to the apps in Dex by going to the Dex app drawer.

There is a fair amount of Dex functionality being lost in these newer versions that make the experience less fun and less productive though i suppose once i get used to it i will make it do most of the stuff i need done but its better if they improve it further rather then strip it down to bare minimums - this is why Samsung fans are not happy with Google taking it over because right now its comparatively farked up BUT i hope that this improves in the future ....... all down to Google now because it seems like Samsung are washing their hands off Dex

okay - so now to access some of the Dex settings you no longer browse to them in the Dex interface but while the phone is connected to the external display you then go the settings of the actual phone and then go to "connected devices" and browse over to the Samsung Dex option and you will find settings for specific resolutions for your monitor as well as your keyboard and mouse - more info in the link below

you can also set it to play the audio via the connected display or via the phone at this setting

So if you use Dex and want something to interface with painlessly - Nexdock have released their 6th generation nexdock unit

https://www.sammobile.com/news/heavy-dex-user-look-new-lapdock/

and here's the link to the actual nexdock website

https://nexdock.com/samsung-dex-laptop/

this might land up at around a similar amount that i spent on getting all the stuff that i did, and is obviously a more elegant way of carrying stuff around that will make your phone work as a PC - in the long term i may look at getting one of these units because you wont need the USB hub since it has 3 USB ports and 2 USB-C ports as well as an HDMI port

it obviously has a laptop like screen and the only thing that i don't like here is the resolution at 1920 x 1200 instead of some form of 4k ultraHD res to bring it up to speed with all modern equipment in the PC world

still a very interesting option at $229 (roughly 3361 at the current exchange rate at time of posting) then obviously shipping plus VAT plus whatever tariffs the SA govt decides to add when it arrives here (so i would estimate approx R5k to R6k landed with everything taken into account in a worst case scenario)

so as i said its all almost over now - but since i borrowed the cash for this stuff - once i pay it back i still have to get the following items :

desktop docking PD charger to charge the PD power bank (clickable Link)

for now i have to use a much slower charger to charge the power bank ..... plus this thing will have the required PD capability f i want to use the setup connected to the wall plugs ie my phone charger is only a 45 watt charger and the hub needs 100 watt

then if i want to also charge the laptop on the go if im not using the Dex setup and using the laptop and the battery dies i can use the 100 watt power bank with the following (on paper - its all assumptions but they do state that its compatible to charge notebooks/dell legacy laptops with the power bank i'm buying)

USB-C to Dell adapter cable (clickable link)

okay to address this bit that i said elsewhere in this thread - i have ordered a GAN Desktop docking charger from Temu and its in the process - it will give me a 100 watt PD USB-C output to charge my 100 watt power bank much faster than leaving a 25 watt charger plugged in overnight ...... and the following item has also just arrived, though Takealot was sold out as were my buddies at Govan mani so i had to grab this from Amazon at around twice the price for the Asus, Acer and HP cable kits

Dell Cable Kit2.jpg

with my Winx 100 watt PD power bank and one of these cables i can charge the Dell laptop "on the go" even though it doesn't have a USB-C charging input - the laptop apparently only needs 65 watts to charge but the power bank is 100 watt PD and this kit contains two different type of Dell charging connectors so i can definitely charge the laptop "on the go"

so now the whole mobile setup is complete with both the laptop setup and also the Dex setup not needing anything else unless at a later stage i decide to get the nexdock for the Dex bit or even maybe a 4k touchscreen monitor since Amazon has a variety of those starting at 14" going all the way up to a portable monitor at 27" ..... imagine having your phone connected to this monster of a portable monitor - just a bit pricey for the Dex functionality though if you really have a top of the line S series phone and this monitor you don't need any other PC equipment basically - the two combined can do most basic PC tasks .... it still seems a bit too niche for most users but i can imagine myself sometime in the future with a monitor like this with an S28 ultra or the like that's new then 😉

27" USB-C and HDMI portable monitor
