at the moment i have a laptop which i use very rarely ie mostly when theres load shedding or power faults hence i only land up using it around once a month or thereabouts BUT each time i power the damn thing up it wants to do a update more often than not - so at those times it takes around an hour for the update to get sorted and for the laptop to be ready to use ..... then recently because its an eighth Gen Intel CPU while my Windows updated to Windows 11 there was some issue with memory distribution that made the stupid thing as slow as trying to swim through sticky syrup and the normal bootup time is now around 3 to 4 minutes AND to top it all off the battery just only lasts around an hour ..... so i'm going to sort this stupid thing out by installing an NVME M2 drive in the provided slot and buying a new battery and doing a new install of Windows 11 in the hope that this will make it usable again ...... in the meantime i just sold my FIIO M11 DAP (Digital audio player) and Sennheiser HD599 headphones to a friend and he is going to pay me with two installments so i will sort out the laptop after he pays the second installment (end of next month)

so with the first installment of cash i decided to get myself some stuff that makes Samsung Dex easy to use since the phone is a very small screen and whenever there are power issues i can access the phone and use things like Youtube and Netflix to keep myself occupied. Initially though i just got one or two items that make Dex work well enough on my TV screen ..... and because wireless Dex on my TV really lags a lot the first purchase was a cable - a USB C to HDMI cable that allows the phone to link up to one of the HDMI ports on the TV

HDMI.jpg

Then i also landed up getting a small desktop tripod stand for the phone so it can stand on the table while i use Dex or while i cast it to the TV or even to the portable setup

Tripod.jpg

this is while the phone is in Landscape mode (above)

Tripod 2.jpg

the phone in portrait mode (above)

then for the portable setup i landed up getting a 15,6" touch screen monitor so its around the same size as a laptop monitor - this thing accepts USB C inputs for video as well as HDMI and i can actually use it as a second monitor for the laptop if i'm in a situation where i'm using the laptop and need multiple screens

Monitor.jpg

so here is what the phone looks like while in use with the monitor with the Dex interface on the monitor - the monitor now just acts like a big tablet if i want it to since its touchscreen when connected with USB

Dex setup.jpg

so i also got a 30000 MAH power bank so that the monitor doesn't draw too much power from the phone and run the phone battery down quickly ..... interestingly when i connect the power bank to the second USB C port it charges the phone as well as giving power to the monitor. Then i got a Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse set so the complete portable setup looks like this

Dex setup 3.jpg

then all of this is obviously going to be a schlep to carry around especially if im carting the laptop with - so i get a bigger laptop bag to carry the entire kit and caboodle around

Bag For Dex Setup.jpg

there are three compartments in the bag - the biggest being reserved for the laptop - then in front of that is another compartment that houses the monitor and in front of that is a third compartment where i keep the mouse and keyboard and mousepad as well as the tripod stand - and there's still a fairly large front pocket where i can keep all the required cables and adapters that i need to also carry around to make this setup completely portable

i only need to figure out a way to allow this setup to allow me to connect external portable drives to it - but there are USB hubs that have a few USB C as as USB 3.0 USB A connections that include an HDMI port as well so im sure in the future i will find some thing that can be included as part of the setup ...... ie something like this

EDIT : I forgot to mention that the entire setup (excluding the phone obviously) was just a smidgeon over R4,5 ZAR so it wasn't a hugely expensive exercise - the laptop battery and 1TB NVME drive will be around a slight bit over R2k so if it makes the laptop usable that also would be a worthwhile exercise too

So anyone else with a dedicated Dex setup? what do you have?

Enjoyed the read.

Kudos for making the "effort" & getting it all sorted for your needs.

This is one element (Dex-like interface) that could be properly handy for an iPhone but we all know why Apple will not allow such functionality.

Keep us updated on how it unfolds.

Link to power bank?

i got a regular version of the WINX 30000 mah power bank - but i found this after i bought that one - it has a few extra features and is around the same price

https://www.takealot.com/winx-go-fa...s5X9jivHPWGLwpbwSldG2iUVo7xi6x0oJW1AHIYjfruwm

and you can use the setup without the power bank - but i reckon that the phone battery would drain pretty quickly ..... so the reason for the power bank is to actually firstly power the monitor without using the phone battery to do so and secondly if you need to use the setup for a long while, for example to watch a movie or two or a couple of episodes of a TV series and you will still have a fully charged phone for the rest of the day ...... either way at under R600 for the power bank you can't really go wrong with it 😉

Cheers. Looking for a dedicated power bank for my pedal board. This looks like it has enough juice to go for hours.Wonder if I can charge it with my Dell 180W power supply.

@naughty001 - what mouse did you get, as i am looking for a nice BT mouse for my tablet.... already has BT keyboard

OT - any other recommendations for tablet mouse (no receiver) would be nice

Hmm I have my portable monitor and a portable mouse and keyboard, should play around with Dex just to see :)

SSD for the laptop arrived early - just going to keep it in the draw till i get the laptop battery - just want to open that cover once and install the SSD as well as the battery at the same time and then just do the fresh install of Win 11 Pro at the same time

here's a pic of the SSD and it isn't a super latest or super fast model since its a pretty oldish laptop but i reckon this should match it and work okay if it fits into the provided slot without any issues

will add pics of these things installed once i get the battery and Windows Key

Windows Key?

I mostly use Azure virtual desktop these days which I run from the Browser.
Going to try work the entire day tomorrow using Dex.

Windows Key?

thanks for that but can get legal OEM keys for R99 each from lots of sources over at Carbonite - so may as well get some of those

lekker OP.

I'm curious to know the total cost of all of this vs getting a NexDock

okay - the breakdown was as follows :

1) keyboard and mouse R230
2) JVC monitor R2700
3) Tripod stand R250
4) power bank R500
5) HDMI cable for TV setup R250
6) laptop bag R300

still to buy but ordering this week :
1) USB C multi hub - under R250

bought or buying at same time for other purposes :
1) SSD M.2 drive 1 TB - R1450 (for laptop)
2) battery for dell laptop - R900
3) USB A powered active hub to add to TV box - R450
4) windows 11 keys x 2 - R200

so how much is a 15.6" NexDock? And what other accessories would you need for the complete setup to make it usable and comfortable (things like carry bags, power banks etc)

It might turn out to be a cheaper and just as interesting to use alternative that may work out easier to carry around, and also work as a more elegant solution, but, since i did not know about it when i started this exercise i can't dwell on it too much, but it might be an option for someone else considering going the Dex way

let us know how it goes
I'm trying it now and it works well but not perfect.
Using the following:
(Just noticed I can't use bullet points with Google Chrome).
*Dell 1440p monitor: Dex can only to 1080p so image quality is not great.
*Adam Elements Dongle: Type c output to phone, HDMI out, 2x USB A input, ethernet, USB C input, ethernet. All working 100%.
*Dell USB C charger plugged into the dongle and power is passing through
*Logitech keyboard and mouse: plug and play

Azure Desktop web client notified me that browser (chrome) is not supported but I can try. It does work but resolution / compression is super bad. I can barely read the time.

So yeah.. Kind of cool and could use it in a pinch but I think I will be sticking to laptop.
