How to protect yourself while using free Wi-Fi

South Africans who want to browse the web or access online services for work or entertainment while using a public Wi-Fi network are cautioned to take extra care to protect themselves from malicious hackers.

I use my own vps installed version of softether which even allows VPN access when only DNS and ICMP is available.

I remember reading about something like this using a Raspberry Pi and reverse tunnelling... Something along the lines of you'd be able to use the Wifi by VPN over ICMP even though you don't have full access.

Do you have the same thing set up?

Most banks won't let you log on if you are using a public wifi connection

Yes, but I use it more extensively than that. Its one of its many tricks. I tunnel from 90% of hotspot splash pages.

I also use it as a network management plane and remote office access. The commercial VPN offerings are a scam.

Just like with Covid 19 the answer is simple. Don't use a public access platform for anything important, and only if absolutely necessary. Afterall why are you in a public place? Enjoy that activity and leave the Internet alone for a while.

Totally this. Gawd, give your brain a rest sometimes. You don’t need to always be on the net.

Is one of the tips: Just have enough data that you don't need to use public wifi for those things?
Ja, I've never understood the insistence some people have on getting the wifi details of the restaurant they're at. Like I get that there's the rare occasion that you're without data or you're at the airport for a long wait...but the local coffee shop and all you're gonna do is whatsapp a few times?

Fair enough.

All networks and endpoints should be considered insecure unless you have complete visibility. Using a commercial vpn or your own vpn introduces similar challenges based on the same concerns.

Free wifi is great for students and low income earners.

Except woolworths in canal walk has edge vodacom signal...can't even open the app to load my vouchers.

It's almost like they know and want you to use their WiFi. They could probably get creative and see what people are searching while in store
