How to read from a computer hard disk without the computer.

My computer (desktop) went, I use a hard disk to save all on, while another had windows on it. The computer is getting replaced but we need a few documents now and it is only on that disk. I am not sure if the laptop got a sata port, but then do I just need 12 volt

Sata to usb adapter or a external usb hard drive enclosure will do the job.

Yea it will.
Not quite sure why they've said it's for 2.5" drives.

I have one of the universal ones... it reads old PATA hard drives, PATA laptop drives, and SATA drives. Its part of my toolkit in my PC toolbox.
