how to recover data on a laptop

My laptop power burned. The communication port was connected to a device. I connected the AC power and smoke came out of the comms cable.

The laptop was switch off. Now it does not start. I need data that is not back up.

The most important question is - is the HDD ok?

If it is ok you coyld always place the drive in an external 2.5" casing & copy the data to another PC.....

Yes, just make sure the interface is the same, SATA & PATA and you're good to go.

If its SATA you can just plug it into a desktop, the plugs are the same. It will come up as another drive like E: and you can copy what you need

I'm afraid that once you've blown it as you describe, the warranty/guarantee is gone.

Plus, AFAIK HDDs are user-serviceable parts.

The HDD should be located under a cover that is probably held in place by only one or 2 screws. & you may open that & where the RAM is located. JUST DON"T ROUCH THE OTHER screws. Though you probably voided your warrantee with your "human damage"...

Bollocks. The hard drive is a user serviceable part like ram. There is a little flap underneath the laptop that you open to remove/replace the hard drive.

If you really don't wanna open it, just boot it up with a boot CD or bootable USB stick.
Easiest would be to download Hiren's Boot CD (Google it).
It'll boot you into a mini-Windows XP environment.
Alternatively, any Linux ISO will do the trick too.
I do this all the time. Boot up, plug in your external drive (via USB) - copy your data off. No risks with warranty issues when it's time to swap out.
