How to register your MTN SIM

Will it reduce crime? Not bloody likely.

I for one am calling the governments bluff and will not be complying with RICA. If that means I loose the priveledge of using my cell phone, so be it. I am tired of the reduction of civil liberties going on around the world and I will not simply silently comply.

If enough people refuse to register their details, the law will have to either be ammended or scrapped. We all know RICA is a ****ty piece of legislature.

i am waiting for them to call quits. they are going to loose so many customers when they cut off everybody next year zachowek!!!!
cos it will take a few days for everyone to register there sim cards and in those few days they can loose millions of rands worth of calls and everything used on there network but on other hand it is a bonus for people that register hehehehehe the network wont be congested

Sorry to be pendantic, but where's the "how"? I only read this article so that I could find out how to register an existing prepaid SIM, and you don't anywhere say what the title says you would.

  • Where do you go?
  • What do you take with?
  • How long does it take?

WARNING! Your cellphone is a pickpocket

I strongly urge you to have a look at the latest issue of NOSEWEEK.

118 AUGUST 2009
WARNING!
Your cellphone is a pickpocket
Unsolicited content services are rich pickings for unscrupulous network providers.
It appears that pre-paid subscribers are even being hit when they don't reply to messages because they don't have air time.
When they later top up their account, the amount "owing" to the WASP is instantly deducted.

Read the editorial on page 7 and then read the whole article on Page 8 ( go to CNA or Exclusive )

Then ask yourself --
If these low life "content service providers" are able to obtain your cell phone number and send you unsolicited pxxn
AND
get money for it deducted from YOUR account WITHOUT your consent.

WHAT will Vodacom "SMS" cracker fraudsters be able to do once they access the RICA database.

Hint: -- ask DOT FIELD late of Vodacom ( who is mentioned in the article )

Most countrys do registration on cell numbers before a sim can be activated.I think we are last country that doing it

SIM cards are going to become like fire arms. To stay out the dwang you will have to make sure it does not land in the wrong hands, ie. report a loss. The virtuality of the system will/may make it possible to still have your fire arm with you while it can be used to shoot someone far away. And all this in the name of "crime prevention" - do they think criminals are stupid???? Ja boet wat nog??

i wonder how this is actually going to reduce crime?
Before doing a job/heist/whatever crims go out a acquire a vehicle , so what stopping them to do the same with a cellphone?

having a contract cellphone they already have all your details.

Vodacom does not do it

Just to test this law, I bought a vodacom starter pack from picknpay and 12.50 airtime.

I activated the starter pack today, loaded the airtime and used the airtime to chat for a few minutes. Now I threw that sim card in the bin.

Will try this again on friday........

by the letter on the new "law" you have committed a crime and can face possible jail time. you can still buy sim cards and use them without registering but in the next 17months or so you cannot.

I bought an MTN starter pack and wasn't asked for anything, but when I tried using it it said I had to be RICA'd first. Is Vodacom the same?

The problem for me is my SA ID is lost and I'm still waiting for a replacement from home affairs. All I have is an old certified copy which I use - is this accepted for RICA? :erm:

R2,000,000 Fine for you then! :D

You can use a Passport, I used my UK passport with both Vodacom & MTN.

This a brilliant idea, badly planned and poorly implemented!

Anyone under 16 years of age now needs Mum & Dad to buy and register their SIM pack! This will go down a storm with the youngsters! They want their parents to pay but not be there when they buy usually!

If you're a Vodacom, MTN or Cell C dealer you can deal with RICA. The independent vendors have been overlooked (squeezed out?) at present!

If you go to places like Ackermans you'll need your ID (or passport) and proof of address before you buy a SIM pack but cross the road to Discom or the Post Office (tested last Wednesday) and you buy an bucket load of SIM's no problem!

On the plus side I've been told that come 1st January 2011 if you have a SIM that is unregistered it will not be switched off (i.e. lost your number) but rather suspended so that you are unable to make calls until you have actually registered.

If you have registered your SIM and have not received a confirmation SMS, your SIM has not been registered!! Always best to stand and watch the "RICA Agent" actually register your SIM and don't accept that the system is down we'll process it later!

I somehow get the feeling that RICA will either collapse in a heap before 1st January 2011 or the deadline will be extended again or may be the networks will just decide to up their charges a little and just pay their R50,000 daily fine and view it as an operating expense? :D
