How to repair a hard disk

The USB device exposes its self as Mass Storage. Ahh geez

Doorstop it. Then ask your friend for a replacement Seagate drive, WD is k@k on a good day, and this does not seem like a good day.

Take it out the external enclosure and plug it into your system's SATA or IDE port and run a few repairs, maybe it's the HDD's USB controller that's at fault.

You see DDV TECH my friend gave the drive to me. He didn't charge me for it, so I can not complain.

I would feel so bad if I told him the drive is a door stop. Even worse if I asked for a replacement.

You understand my situation>?

Not really, he sounds like a real @$%# giving you broken stuff, some people. I heard he's got some new seagate 160's lying around, I'm sure he will do the right thing and replace the drive...

True, what I will do this week. I'll meet him somewhere for a beer. Then tell him about the drive etc.

You think that could work?

@Aqua_lung I shall try that later.

So anyway, my friend was kind enough to replace the hard disk. The new one works fantastically, the old one. Is my new door stop.

I don't need doorstops - I remove the magnets from the HDD's and use them to stick papers and stuff to the fridge :D
