A few months back I had a call from Outsurance, wanting to take over my cover for houses, cars, etc. All went well with the questions (which they say are recorded) until I was asked about the insurance for a house I do not own, and knew nothing about. I was told that on ITCs records, I am shown as the owner of this house and therefore must be paying insurance cover on it. No matter that I insisted that I do not own the house, the Outsurance rep was adamant that I did and the conversation ended

That afternoon I took a drive to see this house to find it does not exist. The house number quoted as the address was 44 in the street. The last house in this street is no 40. The owner at 40 said they had lived there 28 years and no renumbering had taken place, they were always no 40 and on the corner

So I called ITC. The fellow said he wanted to ask some security questions. What was my work telephone no? I told him I was retired. No, this is incorrect he said, according to them (their computer) I still work full time. Ok, how much do I pay Markhams every month. I said nothing, since I have never had an account there and actually never been in the shop. After my failing to answer questions which agreed with what his computer showed (which cannot be wrong) he said my answers were unsatisfactory and I should send them a certified copy of my ID and an affidavit setting out the errors.

When I asked how it was possible that I owned a house which could not exist since the number was wrong, he said it must be another house in that street

The affidavit, etc, was sent in January and handed in at their office at 1 Thibault Square, Cape Town. After not hearing anything for 4 months I enquired. They acknowledged receiving an envelope from me, but were not aware of the contents and what was it about, etc? I must then send the same affidavit, etc once more as they are very busy and I am not one of their commercial customers

Another call to them today shows the same errors about my profile still present and there appears to way I can see to correct it

I enquired with a conveyancing attorney and he looked up the Deeds Office records. The house number in the street that ITC have does not exist and I am shown as the owner only of the other houses I own, and certainly not in that street

If Outsurance phoned you it means FNB approved a homeloan for the house that does not exist and in your name

Urgently speak to someone at FNB home loans. I think Outsurance are their insurance company they appoint for the building insurance.

Yes, I know that. FNB would not divulge anything since I am not an FNB customer. My last home loan was taken out with Nedbank in 1980 and paid in full years ago. Since then I have never taken out any loans

Wow, so you're try to prevent them from suffering a loss due to fraud and they just tell you to fark off?

I'm stumped then, sorry.

Hey man, get the title deed of your house and sell the house to a Nigerian.

The worst that could happen is you'll get scammed, but then he'll be stuck with you house and the subsequent harassment :p

Buy your own credit report
Get a PropIQ report from Property24
Phone Markhams accounts and ask them to search your name / account

So you logged a dispute to have your information corrected? It wasn't fixed?

If you are not satisfied with the resolution of your query, you may contact the office of the Credit Information Ombud (CIO) on 0861 662 837.

Yes, I logged a dispute with Experian. After about a month I was told to contact ITC since they held some qualification on the record, whatever that means

Property24 said that I would need to give them the ERF number in order to generate a report

The consultant asked for your ID number and in return the ITC displayed a few questions on the consultants system and he probably assumed that was your house. The same thing happen to me when I wanted to take out a contract. I got 4/5 questions correct

Contact their fraud division...they're usually staffed by people less thick & more accustomed to listening to the situation instead of script following.

Just tell them you're concerned someone fraudulently took out a loan in your name.

It was FNB fraud division I spoke to, after visiting an FNB branch and asking them what to do. As soon as the operator learned that I had neither an FNB account nor a home loan, I could hear him getting cagey. I suggested that Outsurance had got their facts wrong and he suggested we terminate the call since he was not prepared to continue the conversation
