Ok, given my predicament with "decrypt whatever" below I am thinking. I have a second phone, same as the first, and want to know if it is possible to backup my working phone and try and restore the "bricked" one from this backup. What would I need do this? Bricked phone is unrooted.

Probably worth a shot if you can boot your "bricked" phone into custom recovery...

The unfortunately doesn't boot into custom recovery even after installing cwm. It still goes into standard droid utility.

Can you read anything on the phone when its connected to a PC?

Nope. Can't read anything.

Does the pc pick it up at all? Install the drivers then have a look at the command line utility ADB (Android Debug Bridge) http://www.howtogeek.com/125769/how-to-install-and-use-abd-the-android-debug-bridge-utility/
See if it picks up your phone.
See if it boots into custom recovery if you run
adb reboot recovery

I wonder if you might be able to push the image via ADB:

seems it needs root, perhaps you can root it via ADB, not sure.
