Except you're just weaseling out again because as you said yourself DRM must stay in place but something should or can be done to help with backups. Except upraded equipment won't let me backup, nor watch FULL HD on my HD equipment or
watch from other regions especially as the distributors of those disks are willing to sell to me in other places.

You should post your bs in the AVSForums and see how long you survive.

Pirates have already cracked BD DRM. It's also possible to crack it via connecting to a modified HDCP device eg an LCD screen and capture the digital data as it goes past the HDMI connector. Pirates have also cracked DECSS and various program protections - you can buy pirated versions of Windows, Photoshop and AutoCAD. Pirates will crack everything and it will be DRM-free. A person who buys the BD can't do any of the legally entrenched consumer rights that are allowed in the links rwenzori has posted.

I said us those laws and open a class action suit against the corporations. The MyBB forum is not going to change the Sony stance and neither the law.

Pirates may have done so, they do it for money, but the bulk of the population that copy and download at a daily rate is not the pirates it's your and my kids, neighbours, friends, family anyone that have a pc cable of copying copies of DRM material, MP3's Videos, Music albums, software, etc. That are not in their right and it is not "fair use". Now most with a link to the net do illegal downloads and distribute between family and friends. Call them what you like if that is not piracy then we are not born yet! So with DRM that easy way of doing it is gone. Yeah pirates may crack, sell, distribute the Blu Ray disk but then it is maybe not the same quality due to size/time restrictions. How many kids will quickly download a big file 30G in size, hmmm. If they do, once they have that file what are they gonna write it too or play it on, Hmmm. So yeah I understand their dilema. But fair is fair. You may be able to use it via your equipment but where is a schoolboy going to play it? So yeah that alone will stem the tide a tad and cut out some mass "free for all" market.. Maybepeople justwant the same DVD's and quality you buy at the robot. Not me thanks. I bought exactly 5 in my lifetime, saw the quality chucked them in the bin and purchased the real Mcoy. Paye R150.00 per copy, now you can get them for R75.00.

So how will the piracy "free for all" stopped in future. Who knows, Maybe DRM is for now until new hardware comes where the DRM codecs will actually ID the content and scramble the output if it is illegal much like your DSTV decoder. That there is need for DRM to exists is no doubt. Whether it makes your and the kids life hell is a different issue. Buy the correct legally licenced hardware to decode the media content and there is no problem. Corporations will have to think on how to compensate you for a damaged disk in the event of an "disaster". Maybe insurance is an option? Hmmmm.

The Idea to play it in your I-Phone is great, just buy an interface or device that is licensed to do it. If it does not exist change the brand. Sony PSP can/will play the same content as a PS3 it is licensed to do so. Stuff Apple. Let them create their own content or license their I-phone with SONY by proving the I-Phone is HDCP complient.


Very simple actually. Once this is in place you will pay very little for the hardware and media due to volume sales. The keyword is PAY, not a "free for ALL" orgy.

My gripes with BD were more than that. However, they're all valid reasons and reasons why many customers are staying away. I think you've got some issues going there, INSECURITY?

Bluray movies in 30GB+ files are also on PirateBay.

A copied backup seems to be fine with SA law - many "companies" do "backups" with "For backup purposes only" printed on the discs.

Videoland, here in East London, have Blu-ray discs. I just don't have anything to play them on. I think DVD will do just fine for now. They look very sharp on my 1920x1080i 37" TV, because the DVD player outputs 576p, when using the HDMI. Then the TV blows it up to 1080i. A 576p25 source, like a feature film DVD, looks very, very good on my TV. It's only 37", and it's not like I have a 2K projector. DVD is fine for now.
