How to save on international data roaming charges

Basic rule is do not roam using data, as stated in the article - even Vodacom on their cheapest roaming rate is a rip-off.
 
Another option would be to switch off data when roaming and use the local wifi.
Could have also mentioned Samsung always on wifi solution, always on is almost everywhere around the world.

Ps. I'm against buying local sims, for a 7 day visit or less its a waste, unless you an idiot roamer that is.

I travel a lot around africa, and find that spending the +- R100 rand to get me connected makes all the difference to the quality of life for that week.
 
I set my spare phone to SMS's only on my SA sim(MTN) for internet banking and use my smartphone with wi-fi and the country's sim overseas for the internet.

Agreed. And the times and places where I travel to seems to be far away from Wifi... I miss my wife too much in any case and usually want to Skype twice daily.
