How to set up PPPOE with Usb modem and network cable ?

Hi there well got the Ethernet cable for usb modem today set it up as per microsoft help centre on windows xp32bit where modem works perfectly in usb mode but with ethernet cable plugged in it gives a remore computer did not respond error each and every time ??

Any help would be helpfull . Ps the ethernet port on pc works fine for connecting to another pc I tested this .

I am now using USB cable but I did tried out ethernat cable once and worked.

I just use the CD supplied by Sentech , select ethernet option instead of USB.

It worked , no problem at all.

Got it working

Hi there got it working on my xp32bit and on my xp64bit now so no problem was question of having to turn modem of and back on when one switch the cable .

Glad to hear you got the modem working in PPPoE mode. Are you using the built-in WinXP PPPoE? Let us know if it works well.

..so you've successfully got your modem connecting via USB? But just to make 100% sure you've got your account data locked into your modem, connect by USB and goto this site (Sentech user account maintenance page) and log in, then out. After that you can(should be able to ) safely go over to Ethernet and forget USB.

As the others have said, you'll be best off using Windows' built in PPPoE: it does the job and means you have to install ANY new software. Just go through the "New Connection Wizard" and create a new PPPoE connection. About the only thing you may want to add if it doesn't want to work is add "*99#" (minus the quotes) to the "Service Name" field.

Sure, you CAN install the Sentech dialer software in Ethernet mode, which'll give you the (possibly dubious) benefit of seeing modem/tower stats, but I can't recall a time when I had a problem using the built-in XP PPPoE client.

I recommand you use Sentech's dialer, When you phone Sentech to complain ,for whatever reason (you probably will ) ,you need to know which tower you are connected to.

Meh, you can always go back to USB (to keep the script-reading "support" monkeys happy (sorry, too cynical after too many "support" line experiences)) to get said stats. For my money, the less added to Windoze to destabilise it the better!

XP Dialer

I strongly recomend you use the XP pppoe dialer cause it is much more stable then sentech's one. Also, install ProAsm fantastic MySignal program so you can still call sentech and tell them what tower you are connected to (keep the usb cable handy).

Maybe I'm just not getting it or something , but I can't get the damn thing to work with the ethernet cable.i uninstalled the USB driver and did a reinstall of the software , choosing the ethernet option.Installation went through , but without the 30 seconds modem detection stage.I then edited my registry with my username/password info.
The connection shows as "Connection through NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller" windows Netowrk Connections(I've got an onboard NVIDIA ethernet card).
Launching the modem dialler , I get the message :
"Error 692.There was a hardware failure in the modem(or other connecting device)"
Isnt this suppose to be easy?

Driver

Verify that the device (NIC) has the correct drivers and that is working ok, or if it's enabled in the bios. seems to me the problem is between the software and your NIC so, try to see if u can ping your NIC, give it an IP and then ping that ip, also, verify that the firewall is off!

I just setup the Ethernet cable with Fedora Core 5 in under 10 mins , connected ,etc without issues.Hence I can safely say the NIC is working correctly.I suspect perhaps the driver is a default XP one.Will check on motherboard CD and let you know how far i get

Well, *there's* 10/however-many-it-took wasted minutes you'll never get back! ..seriously, if you're connectiing via Ethernet, you don't even need ANY software installed! You say you've got Fedora- why not give it a try to connect vie PPPoE (I keep hearing Roaring Penguin on this topic, but don't take my word on this part of things, I AM a Linux n00b!) by way of a crosscheck?

..as above, and definitely! One thing tho': when you connect modem to PC, is the green LED on the cable coming up solid, or is it blinking? I've seen my modem lose the plot sometimes when I jack it into the router and it's not sure about whether to switch on or what do a very fast blink, until it settles down 'n the light comes on a steady green...

On a XP & a nVidia chipset NIC: yea, you'd want to go with the driver rather than anything XP may attempt. Get that right and just do the the 'New Connection Wizard' to setup a new PPPoE connection.

..ah. Ta for the reminder that it helps to read ALL the words! But, clearly, if it worked OK in Linux and not in 'doze, then we know the problem ain't in the modem or the cable! ..but your getting it right in Linux just confirms my point that you don't need any (blerry!) Sentech dialer software polluting your PC if you're connecting via Ethernet (.. so there)
