In its recent announcement that it would be increasing electricity tariffs, Eskom assured South Africans that poorer households would continue to receive free basic electricity.

Well that's what society is. If a portion happens to be poor and earn less than R3000/month or heck less than the R1064/month then by all means subsidise them. Should they live in squalor and burn rubbish to cook and to heat in winter?

This is for people who are literally scraping by..take that R3000, divide it by 30 days and work out how much you would have every day of every month to spend on food, clothes, electricity/gas, medicine, transport, airtime, school fees...so R100/day. If you can make it all on R100/day and pay for all of the above and probably more in case of emergency etc. then great. Otherwise it seems a little insensitive towards those who are perhaps struggling/don't have a job/don't get paid minimum wage (R21.61/hour) or who lost their job due to COVID
