I have been waiting for over 6 months to get ADSL, two years ago I was told that there was no copper in this area as it had been replaced by fiber optic. In the last couple of months there have been large numbers of telkom techies in the area and I assume they were making changes.

I phoned today to inquire how far it had got, and the guy we spoke to told me that a DSLAM port had been assigned to me 6 months ago, though nothing was done about it.

He then said he was sending a "note" but was unable to give me a date of installation.

Whats the best thing to do from here?

Just keep on keepin' on. Keep complaining to telkom.

If i understand it correctly they did assign a port to u. So you are suppose to be able to get ADSL. Hasstle them every day.

Alternative would be to go Wireless, but that is a road that i do not encourage unless its the last resort. (speeds r only nice if signal strenght/signal quality is good, lots of tower problems, maintainance times are usually 5 to maybe 12hours long) Also, they shape you to hell on wireless, and usually don't give lots of priority to home users.. and also your put in a pool with hundreds of ppl (they say its 20 or 50, but they try to make money... so ye.). example. I've heard of ppl that have 128K or 256K uncapped but don't get more than maybe 5-10kb per sec on average. Also some of the isp's limit your speeds after u reach 2-3gigs anyway to cut on costs. On 256K Uncapped wireless u might see 20-25kb per sec.. doubt u'll get 30kb per sec for more than 5seconds at a time.. but once u reach 3gigs or so. it gets slowed :>

Getting it is one thing - Keeping it going is another

I agree with the comments on wireless having just terminated mine and switched to ADSL on 09/02/2007.

Getting ADSL is one thing - keeping it going is another. Telkom has structured its call centre help desks in such a way that each one is insulated from the others. This is avoid the people manning the help desks from confusing each other and the clients. This objective has been achieved, but contributes very little to solving ADSL and ISP problems.

Some ADSL users are very happy, and some desperately unhappy, and then there are those that fill in every possible status in between.

When I ordered ADSL, Telkom plugged someonelses line where mine was suppose to go in the exchange! The phone went completely dead for 3 days. They sent a technician to fix it though.

Just do self install...

If you have a port then go and pick up your free modem and plug it in. It should be activated virtually instantly then....

If you don't have a port, get yourself a cold one and start waiting....

Also helps if you work for a large corporate - we have hundred's of telkom lines and if I have any telkom problems I get one of our guys to scream at the telkom rep and they jump!! :)

Got a phone call from Telkom, they are installing the adsl line tomorrow *faint*

Been waiting for 3 weeks, now they phoned me and tell me someone will give me a call in 15 WORKING DAYS to confirm a date!

Breathless

Don't hold your breath waiting for the call. I would have died weeks ago if I had heeded what I was told by Telkom about calls that would be made to me!
