Hello...
I often get questions about how to do this on different forums and i thought it may help to setup this guide. This guide is aimed at a PS3, but should be the same method for an Xbox, i am however not sure of this because i dont own one
I hope that this is Sticky'ed by one Of the admins!
Anyway, lets get started!
I will be doing this guide on windows 7 Ultimate, but i wll be adding Windows XP within 24 hours.
We Will be using Windows Media Player to Stream our Media, as it is already in every Windows system.
backround:
Media Streaming is, in a nutshell, allowing Wireless devices to access/watch/copy Your Media Such as movies, music and photos. This is very handy as you dont have to Move all your Media to your PS3 or Console by flash disk. And Can keep everything syncronized (the same).
Advantages:
as said above, this allows us to watch all our media stored in one location, on many different wireless devices. And instead of copying a Move or song to every PC and console, we can now just play or copy them!
Disadvantages:
Wireless streaming is usally not able to cope with HD Video and May lag during the play back, the solution - either upgrade your Router etc. Or try to Setup a Wired Network...
lets get started!
Windows 7 Ultimate Guide:
Checking:
What We are first going to do, is to check if we have the nessesary Hardware:
We Need:
1. a Wireless Router
2. a PS3 - Connected wirelessly to router
3. a PC - Connected wirelessly to router
Organising:
once you have verified that we are good to go with the next step...
Open up Windows Media Player
Select Organize > Manage Libaries
From here organise your libary so that all your Movies , Music and Pictures are put into the Program, by "Showing" Windows Media Player the folders, your Media is in.
Defaults are:
Music - My Music
Pictures - My Pictures
Videos - My Videos
you can either move all your Media into the corrosponding folders, or change the defualts to the folders they are currently in.
once we have our Media organised, we can move onto the next step!
Streaming:
now that our media is organised we can begin the Streaming process:
Select Stream > Allow Remote Control of My Player (Select it to make it allowed)
Select Stream > Automatically Allow Devices to play my Media (Select it to make it allowed)
Now Lets go into some more detail.
Select Stream > More Streaming Options
From here, Give your Libary a Name and Customize Which devices are allowed to acces the libary, it would be easier to just say "allow All" so we can move on, or you can choose each device:
Note:
the ps3 will be dislpayed as PS3 or Unknown Device...
if you cannot see it in the list, just allow all Devices...
once you are done with this, select "choose homegroup and Sharing options" from the bottom...
once in here make sure that " Stream my Pictures, Music and Videos to all Devices on my Home Network is ticked.
once that is done, go to "Advanced Sharing Settings" from the bottom. Select "home Or Work" and Make sure that:
"Network Discovery" - is set to on
"Media Streaming" - is ON
Media Streaming Should now be setup!!
Finishing Touches:
Go Onto your PS3, And search for Media Servers if your is not already displayed, if it finds nothing try turning off your Firewall and Change Nessesary Setting for your Router. I have no knowlege of router settings, just ask in the networking Section...
You should now See all your media from your PS3
NOTE:
if you are in the Music Section on your PS3 and you go onto the Media Server, ONLY MUSIC WILL BE DISPLAYED! ie: to watch movies, go from the movie section etc...
