How to study without matric :)

can you provide info on which other assessment bodies will still offer it?

The last information I received from the Department of Education said that they were revising policy so that candidates who are eligible for the Senior Certificate will be able to receive a National Senior Certificate on the same material they did previously.

This would mean that you would not need to do SBAs and Life Orientation would not be required. The Department of Education and SACAI (South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute) would be offering this.

Exams went well, passed everything without issues.

Will update shortly.

EDIT: Received a digitally signed copy of my GED certificate today, waiting for the original to be delivered.

I now have to get accepted into an American university (probably going to use Empire State University). Then send through my GED certificate along with the letter of acceptance from Empire State to HESA, who will then send me a National Senior Certificate with Foreign Conditional Exemption.

I'll then use the above to gain admission to UP's Bcom Accounting Sciences program.

Not 100% sure how admission will turn out but I will update the thread and, perhaps, create a new thread with all the details, to help other frustrated students who feel lost in the system. :)

Another quick update:

There was a mix up with my account. After weeks of waiting, they finally sent my G.E.D certificate via US mail about a week ago. Takes about 10-15 working days so should be here shortly.

Also applied at Empire State College, wrote the essay and got accepted. Now I'm just waiting for my certificate to arrive, and registrations to open at Unisa & Tuks.

Yet another quick update:

Okay, I decided that I want to do my BCom through Unisa, while working for a CA. And then for my 4th year (honours) - I'll go to Tuks. That way I'll have 3 years working experience by the time I'm done with my honours year, it should then help with getting into one of the big 4.

Applications opened at Unisa on the 14th of August 2014, 08:00. I was at HESA's offices right across the road from Unisa, at 07:20. They opened 10 minutes later and I received my letter stating that I do qualify for "Foreign Conditional Exemption" from them.

08:15 I completed my application at Unisa, now I just have to wait.

Make sure its a SAICA accredited training office...if you manage that it can be counted towards article years. It'll take some doing to get that right though...spots for 5 year programs are very limited.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but there is zero chance of you jumping from UNISA to Tuks for Honours even if you do well marks wise. Even Tuks 3rd year to Tuks honours is a mission (a lot of guys get their degree but are denied honours admission)

If you're hell bent on jumping from Unisa to Tuks then it'll have to be in first or second year...they'll still make you retake course & pretty much set you back a year. Unis are nasty like that...I know a guy Unisa made a Tuks student re-do a year too. With 1st world unis its even worse.

Personally I'd just stick to Unisa...once you make it past board 1 & 2 nobody cares where you went anyway. The boards are great equalizers in that regard.

"Foreign Conditional Exemption"
Be warned that the foreign guys in my class couldn't get big 4 contracts...big 4s didn't want to take a chance since they don't know whether the person will have a work permit in X years or what laws might apply to foreigners that far out. You can counter this to a limited extent by applying for a pure contract rather than a bursary but it'll still take some doing.

Hi Havoc,

Thanks for the kind words.

Damn, thought you could do your honours at a different university... Only reasons for not wanting to do my honours through UNISA is the extra year it takes, as well as not being able to move to one of the big 4 for my articles.

According to SAICA's website, there are 3 registered training offices around me. The thing is, after 3 years I was hoping to move to Gauteng, finish my honours and get into one of the big 4. Only reason I'm staying at home (in Limpopo) is because of the super low salaries when doing articles before graduating, I cannot live in Gauteng with a salary of less than R8k.

And regarding the highlighted part of your post, I'm a South African citizen with an American matric. I don't need a work permit due to being a citizen, why would they be worried?

Done - and considered it a waste of time :p I want a degree...

Done Diploma in Network Engineering, MCSE, MCSD and MCBA (for reference :))

Your Dip. In Network Engineering will allow you to articulate into a degree. The diploma you completed is accredited by SAQA. Varsity College have some IT degrees in the pipeline (in the accreditation process). One to roll out next year and 2 more in 2016.

I decided I want to do a degree in information technology - purely because I have no other formal qualification, and because it'll keep me entertained and out of trouble.

The problem is most places, like Unisa, require matric, or some other qualification, what are alternatives in getting round this? There's no ways I'm interested in doing matric :p and I some how don't think they'll believe me if I tell them I'll do extremely well because its what I do daily, and have been doing daily for the last 10 years....

I also like the idea of doing it through an international university, but the same problem applies...

Hi, i have been battling for quite some time to get into unisa as i left school after grade 10. I however did my N6 diploma and i qualified for a +23 conditional exemption. I am now registered for bsc informatics. I must say it has been quite a mission but it is possible .Google "2011 ame admission criteria" its the first pdf document, that will tell you if you qualify or not. It basically states that without a matric certificate BUT with one of the diplomas from group B you can apply for matric exemption. There is also another type of +23 exemption for technical N subjects only. I hope this helps anyone here. With unisa i find its best to keep phoning and emailing as the people that work there dont seem to understand the exemption without matric .They keep asking for it. I suggest showing them the document. I know its a bit late but someone might just have the same problem this year and this could help someone. I dont know if anyone is still here or if you all have degrees by now haha.

Hello there

Im logged in as a new user.

I recall it was 4 N3 subjects and HG eng and afri.

I am GravyFace from the text wall on page 4/5

I thought I would provide an update:
I completed my BSc Informatics part time with Cum Laude ( Switched from BCom to BSc)

I am now aiming for BCompt instead of Hons in Comp Sci. If I am going to spend 4 years doing masters, I might as well use that time to develop a plan B career in accounting - possibly move on to CA. I will see the state of my faculties before I turn 37.

@djbrendan: look at abet. Its governments program for people who left school (adult basic education program). If you are over 23 you can write matric straight after which you get a certificate. Also exams are around june and registrations will be closing on it soon.

Hey guys pls help my sister is 33yrs now she want to go back to school. She have grade 9 but she failed, what i want to know is she qualitied if she can register with grade 8 report at ABET schools? Pls help

Hi Everyone, I need help.
My son completed his GED.
Which USA university is easy to get a letter of acceptance from, without the SAT/ACT requirement and which USAF will accept?

Thanks in advance

My friend failed his Matric back in 2016 i think. Now he has considered doing a GED because he wants to study abroad. Anyone had luck with the GED abroad and which schools accept this mainly looking at Europe.

He wants to do a USA certification to study in Europe? Probably not terribly efficient.

Yes that's correct. I think because some schools require just a high school leaving certificate.
