How to study without matric :)

Hi Gravyface

sorry for the highjack , just wanna confirm is a N3 certificate not a Senior Certificate ?
I have N3 with Maths, Eng Science, Industrial Electronics, Instrument Trade Theory, Electrical Trade Theory and English and Afrikaans all on HG but apparently it means **** , and nowhere on my cert does it mention University Exemption so i cant enroll at Unisa for a BSc IT

Ive sent numerous mails asking for help but nothing even used the stupid contact us tab on the website

can someone maybe give me some info about these access courses i tried the link that Korn posted doe snot work have also searched UNISA website still nothing

thanks peeps

4 N3 subjects + 2 languages = a (very basic) senior certificate.

It might get you into a BA, but unless you got super high marks, won't get you into a degree that needs maths/science...

As far as I know...

Did nothing... project changed, salary increased :) so did work load :( Just don't have the time... maybe one day... I contacted Unisa - they said no go... I contacted an overseas uni, they said they'd accept me on recommendation from my company, which won't be a problem.

Give the ANC a call. Zuma only has Std 4 but he has a few honorary degrees, including 2 doctorates. Hell, he's even getting another degree to add to his collection next week.

I want the gained intelligence that comes with studying though :p

I am sure you will find time later in life for studying but everything seems to be going your way.

Job-wise it generally has gone my way :p

When it comes to other things...well that's a different story :p

I can relate to all this
I dropped out at standard 8. Not because of some bull**** reason, I was a delinquent and got involved with the wrong type of ppl etc. Somehow I managed to get my senior certificate in an art techincon with subjects like art of drawing , graphic design, business English etc. I then got my n4 and n5 in graphic design and photography. Anyways so I got a job , self sufficient , but with a huge sense of under achievement.

At that time I had developed a keen interest in web design and development so I wanted to get my BSC, as all web development jobs require the qualification. Well Unisa wouldnt let me, simply because my senior certificate didn’t have mathematics. I can understand the requirement but this seriously bummed me out. So anyway I did the ‘developing web applications with php’ through unisa(short course with no requirements) Absolutely loved it! And two weeks ago I got hired as a web designer… with a perk of joining the development team.
The guy who hired me was very impressed that I did the php short course being a designer.
Anyways , If I want to get my BSC, I need to get my mathematics from standard eight, which afaik means I would need to redo my ENTIREstandard 9 and matric?

There should be bridging courses (maths/science/english) for those that want to enrol in university I believe.

How hard would it be to create courses for the above and set an exam. You repeat all that stuff in the beginning of your first semester anyway. I also don't see why you need a second language, english should be good enough.

Does Unisa not accept foreign A-Levels (GCSE) for entry? If they do then maybe this is an option http://www.nec.ac.uk/index-lsn.html

Hi guys,m new here,i have a brother who failed his matric last year,he's now working and wants to finish his matric by correspondence. He passed 4 subjects and wants to re-write the 2 subjects he failed. Which cape town school/college/university offers people to do their subjects again(without attending classes) and What are the roughly costs for a class?he wants to start next year(2012) since its already late to register now. We live in parklands area.thanks.

I wrote matric in 2006 and only passed 4/6 subjects. My marks were as follows :

English HG - D
Afrikaans HG - D
Economics HG - D
Business Economics HG - D

I then attempted to rewrite one of the two failed subjects (because you only needed to pass 5 subjects to get matric) again in 2007 and 2008 but failed - no long story, simply didn't open a book.

Anyway, seeing as I am now 24yrs old I thought I could apply for matric exemption through Unisa. This check list (http://www.unisa.ac.za/contents/myChoice/docs/myChoice2012-Admission-requirementsBD.pdf) asks the following :

Will you be at least 23 years before
or on 31/12/2012 (ie born in 1989
or earlier)?
- Yes, I will.

Did you pass 4 Senior Certificate
subjects with at least symbol E?
(only HG/SG accepted)?
- Yes, I did.

Were at least 3 subjects
passed at one examination
sitting?
- Yes, 4 subjects were passed in one sitting.

Was 1 subject passed
on Higher Grade?

- Yes, four subjects were passed on Higher Grade.

If you answered “yes” to all the
questions, please apply for an
exemption certificate.

Seeing as I answered yes to all the questions, I applied for an exemption certificate to do a Bsc Informatics in 2012 (S1). After paying the necessary fees and submitting the necessary documents, Unisa emailed me stating that my application for conditional exemption was successful and I can now register for the Bsc Informatics. I registered my chosen modules, paid the study fees and was told that my registration would take a minimum of two weeks to get approved.

So, am I missing something because after reading the posts in this thread it seems that a degree without a matric certificate is impossible?

If Unisa do come back and say my registration was not approved, how can I go about getting my matric? Would I just need to do one subject, seeing as I've passed four HG Grd 12 subjects already?

Any thought on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Someone I know has a similar problem. He has grade 8 or 9. Is it possible to skip all the other grades and just go write matric examination? I mean how hard can it be to write examination for 7 matric subjects?

No, found this out last year. You have to complete all grades individually and it takes an average of 18mths per grade if your not doing it fulltime at school (got a friend whos gr10 kid just quiet school and a staff member with std7 who we wanted to send to collage)

Also my sister in laws kid dropped out of Grade 10 to rather study at home, took her 5yrs to do Grade 10,11 & 12

FYI: Just grabbed this off UNISA site, clears up a lot of speculation on this thread:

I have a A-Level (did matric in Germany). Thereafter I completed an apprenticeship in hotel management (3 years).
Been out of the hotel industry for years and I would like to start studying. I have plenty time to do so.

Where do I start? Do I first need to get a diploma to be able to get a degree? I guess my 3 years of hotel management count here as a diploma, not sure though.
Do I even qualify for university/unisa?

Does anybody have a contact person at unisa that will actually understand what I'm talking about. I have spoken to 3 people there and they don't understand the qualifications I have.

I dont have a matric either , currently i am doing ok with my business in virtualization. But i also wanted a degree and even thought of buying one, but i will try the six month route i recon and then go for the degree side of things. How does one go about getting it now do i just approach a school or college?
