Hi there and thank you so long for your help.

Had a HTC untill yesterday and now have a BlackBerry 5820 and have BEN enabled.

I have managed to setup my phone to receive new e-mail messages from the exchange and I can also send from my BB.
BUT, my calendar, contacts and e-mail messages do not sync with my phone. (I only receive new messages on my phone.)
Surely my BB must be able to do this. I have looked and could not find something like "ActiveSync". Under "Contact List Properties", Wireless Synchronization is "Not Available".
What do I need to enable my whole Outlook to sync with my phone.

Thank you once again for your help.

Have you got a BES server linked to Exchange? If not, get one.

Hi there and thanx for the reply.

No, no BES server linked to the exchange. Sjoe, I wonder why BB is so difficult and that they don't have something like ActiveSync. I have forwarded your reply to our IT guy.

Just for a start, before we have this BES linked to the server, is there an easy way to get all my Outlook Contacts on my BB?

Thank you very much for your help.

Regards,
Deon

In the absence of BES, here's what i do

1. Get a GMAIL account
2. Get Google Sync on your BB [it is most likely already there]
3. Get Google Sync on your PC
4. Set up your outlook to sync with the gmail account [calendar + contacts]
5. Set up BB to sync with gmail [calendar + contacts]

So gmail becomes a type of "central hub" to sync everthing . If you somehow lose your phone or your PC you can still get everything in gmail . If you got more devices then you just sync with gmail .

You can also simply import all your contacts into GMAIL , and then sync your BB from there directly...easiest to get contacts on your phone.

I like this very much. Thank you for the step-by-step explanation. Fortunately I do have a GMAIL account. I will just do as you have suggested.

Deon

Ok, thank you very much.

I have tried to get my PC & BB to see one another, but I cannot see if they see one another. The BB Device Manage says "Connected". None of the links/options on the BB Desktop Manager respond when I click on them. On my BB, I have a picture of a Phone and PC with two opposite arrows between them. I also did get a message asking me if I want to use the phone as a mass storage device.
I think that I am either doing something wrong or some installation of the PC software did not install correctly.
Windows 7 ultimate.

If u do not have a BES server, then paying for BES (it has a higher subscription) is pointless as the big thing of BES is it syncs everything provided u have a BES server. If u not planning on getting one, I suggest u contact customer care of ure service provider and request they switch u to BIS instead.

Fortunately I have already BIS enabled on my BB.

On which SP do you pay more for BES? To my knowledge the fee is the same whether you have BIS, BES or both.

@ OC: If you have your own BES server, do you still need to subscribe to BES from vodacom?

Yes, or it wont work. You have to activate the handset on your BES server....and if you dont have BES provisioned on your line, the activation will fail.

Fortunately I have already BIS enabled on my BB.

Keep in mind BIS and BES are 2 different things. BIS is the standard personal internet service and does not cover all the syncing with exchange. BES is the enterprise service which is a corporate thing so you can sync with your company's exchange etc. BIS you get standard from Vodacom/MTN/Cell-C , BES you need to set up with your company and have specific services set up in said company etc etc.

Why the heck would anyone want a phone that you have to pay in an additional R98 a month just so it works? And keeping that in mind, the phone will have less features than a similar priced phone.. I don't get BB at all.

Because you have automatic, near immediate sync/delivery of email, calendar, contacts, tasks, etc., combined with the ability to access your company's intranet sites, and nearly all data traffic included in the price as well.

True a Data bundle for that amount of traffic would work out pretty much the same or more. The only problem I have is that you need a BES server to truly realize the functionality in a corporate environment. Luckily BB has released a free version of BES but it's still a mission to setup and manage.

@ocleroux, I am trying to understand. I am on Vodacom SP and I have BIS as well as BES active. My BB is activated on our company BES and I have 3 additional mailboxes pushed to the phone via BIS. To my knowledge the BES sub on Vodacom always includes BIS, MTN are fickle enough to differentiate more. I noticed that on a colleague's phone which was activated on our BES but didn't have the Mobile Email Setup (which AFAIK is BIS functionality) until I told him he must tell MTN specifically that he needs both BES and BIS. Which eventually worked out. Why is it you say that you can't have BIS and BES active at the same time?

@TheGuy, a BES server is actually quite easy to set up and maintain. The BES software is pretty solid, and I do minimal maintenance on our server. The only time you touch it (outside of actual probems) is to add users to it. It's really not as much of a mission as some people might think.

On Vodacom SP we charge:

BES = R98.00
BIS = R59.00

And no...you can not have BIS and BES active at the same time.

I would also like to know why you cant have both active at the same time ? I am on vodacom bes but have bis as well.

Alright....let me try and explain a bit more. I have had to do this a few times already this year...and the more I try and explain it...the more people tend to tell me I am talking out of my @ss!

BIS is aimed at individual users. Gives you your Vodafone SatNav, browsing on device, facebook and all the other goodies. BES does exactly the same thing that BIS can do, but with the added functionality of OTA sync with your companies exchange server, provided that your company has a BES server installed ontop of the company mail server. So, if you have BES, you will be able to do whatever a BIS client can do and more.

BUT, it is still two different VAS's with different pricing for each and different service codes on our system. When you are on BIS, and request us to activate BES for you, then the system will automatically delete BIS and load BES for activation. Otherwise you will be charged R157.00 instead of just R98.00 for BES. That would just be stupid and unfair. That my friends is why you cant have BIS and BES services active at the same time on our system. But dont be fooled...I REPEAT....BES will give you everything BIS has to offer....BUT with MORE functionality.
