@ mods, can you sticky this please and maybe lock it?
When you use your PC / Modem / Phone to access the network, you use quite a complex network with the following main components in the chain:
Your PC->modem->Vodacom Radio Network->Vodacom Back-haul Network->Local Telco Network->International Network->Server.
Problems affecting throughput can be anywhere along this path and is not always easy to pinpoint. However, there are some tests you can do to try and see where the bottleneck might be. These include:
1) Vodacom Speed Test (http://speed.vodacom.co.za): This will test all elements to right before you leave the Vodacom network and should always be the first test you run.
2) Speedtest.net - JHB Server (http://speedtest.net): This will test the local Telco network portion. Note: Cape Town server is now working again - 2009/11/28
3) Speedtest.net - New York Server (http://speedtest.net): This will test the international network portion.
If you use a Blackberry, you can use this app: http://www.xtremelabs.com/assets/mobile/speedtest/speedtest.jad
If you use an iPhone, you can use this app: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=286356274&mt=8
Both these only do the international test.
You can post your results in the relevant thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=60978
