How is your backup?
If its recent, then low-level format the HDD and re-install
That makes NO sense. A password protected file doesnt magically become unprotected if you put it in a usb drive. It can only have been a different file without a password.Well, you never know....
A few years back I had a call from my lawyer. His buddy had died and there was an Excel file they desperately needed off his computer, which had a login password
He took it to a HDD repair place who offered to get the file for a payment of R 10500,00
I went to his office, took the HDD out the machine, attached it to a USB adaptor and plugged it into my laptop
In the MyDocuments folder/Excel on this drive was the file he was looking for
There are always ways and means

OP do you know the type of ransomware?

My badThe excel file did not have a password. Windows login did. I did mention login password, not excel password
If I am a novice computer user I would always invest in a good internet security software. Now that u are in a pickle I give u two optionsIts is locked and I cannot get on, the scammer says he will only unlock it if I pay him? please help
Only if its winxp login password.Sounds like the PC's login/Admin password has been changed.
Can't this be sorted with Hirens ?
You'd be wasting your money. Microsoft Defender is good enough. Wouldn't have helped the OP anyway since she was conned...If I am a novice computer user I would always invest in a good internet security software. Now that u are in a pickle I give u two options
- reinstall ur operating system, won't cost u anything.
-get it to a professional, will cost u some money but depending on his expertise might be able to reverse what the hacker did .
