Hi

Quick question. I have a 6230i and my apps like MXit and Opera all connect using GPRS. Now how can I connect using EDGE? I know my phone is EDGE-enabled, must I get EDGE settings? Sorry I'm a newbie at EDGE?

almost impossible to tell unless you download netmonitor.....V3G might correct me on this though

not available for the 6230i unless you are willing to fork out about R4000.

Hay??????

When I was still interested in the 6230i I found a company in the UK I think that custom loaded the netmonitor onto the 6230i. They charged something like R4000 for the phone, but also would only sell it to network employees.

Display 6.12 has a value "EGPRS support". A value of 1 means EDGE, but you still wouldn't know what coding scheme is available. I.e. you may still end up with only 80 kbps, or you may get 236 kbps. There's also no telling if your uploads will be EDGE either.

Knowing if you're in EDGE is a bit of a hassle right now. We're looking at ways to put the info out including cell-broadcast, on-line map, etc.

I normally do a download and check the speed. This gives me a good indication of what coding scheme I'm on.

My new phone is EDGE capable (Nokia 9300), but when I originally downloaded the settings to my SIM, it was on a GPRS-only phone. Does that make a difference? I am not seeing EDGE speeds. Should I re-request the settings?

V3G, you have this phone, is there any indicication on the screen when EDGE is connected? Is there a netmonitor for the 9300?

No need to re-request the settings. If you have EDGE coverage, your phone will automatically use it.
There is no indication on the screen if you are using EDGE on the 9300...
Cheers ~

An EDGE phone will automatically select the best possible connection, so if you're in EDGE coverage you'll get the higher speed.

Not really hey, you have to set your phone to DUAL MODE. Under network settings.

Depending on the model. Which phone do you have?

EDGE is an 'software' extension of GPRS and uses the same radio frequencies. There are however 4 bands available for GSM, thus the tri- or quad-band GSM phones.

UMTS or 3G uses a completely different network and frequencies.

A 3G phone is basically two completely independent phones in one, a GSM plus a 3G device in one body. This is one of the reasons it took so long for decent sized 3G phones to become available. Same with battery life.

In the Nokia 6680, for example, 'Dual' means GSM and 3G.
