Hi All

This has been said allot over the past but I would like to reiterate the following.

I have a 4Mbps ADSL setup at home with an unshaped account. Now I only use an unshaped account due the lower response times you get and that just provides you with the best internet experience.

Now to my point:
During January I went through the following notions, I work from home every day for 2 hours, Browse in the evening for another hour. Play World of Warcraft 3 times a week and download the occasional trailer and video review from some international sites.

I decided that January I am not going to be stingy and check my usage constantly I just wanted a well rounded Internet experience!

I DO NOT PIRATE AND DONT DOWNLOAD MOVIES AND MUSIC WITH TORRENTS OR ANYHING LIKE THAT TELKOM!

Well now to my bill at the end of the month.

Telkom ADSL R450
Telkom TELE R108
General phone calls R208
ISP Charge (6.23 Gigabyte usage) R1080
Total: R1846

Now that is just disgusting and outright ripping us off. I supported TAG! and I hope we have more projects like that

Come on NEOTEL do you want me as a customer?

Believe me I'm not being judgemental but if you're not downloading movies, music, etc like you say then what are you downloading to suck up all that data? :eek:

Also who is your ISP and what package are you using because there has to be a cheaper way for you.
 
I use up 9GB of data with no media downloads. Bf2 uses about 150mb a round, and I will play 20 rounds on a weekend day.

With 9 GB I am unable to stream say 702, and have enough bw to game.

I know there is cheaper less pleasing ways.

I wanted to prove a point! There should be one standard, no shaping.

That is the cost of getting the best possible experience, like they do oversees, they have it standard we have to pay through our teeth.

Cheaper is pleasing :) I go through 40gb a month and having seen what you pay find myself very pleased.

Totally agree but until that happens I'm not going to feed the beast more than I have to just to prove a point that everyone with adsl already knows. :)
 
So telkoms reasoning is!

So what you are saying is.

ISP1 for Gaming (International)
Disconnect, reconnect with
ISP2 for browsing.
Disconnect, reconnect with
ISP3 for Local Gaming (BF2).
Disconnect, reconnect with
ISP4 for Connection to work.

Now in my view that is unnecessary and just TELKOM's way of screwing the non-intellectual.

If you're using one machine many of those could probably be accomplished with route sentry which automatically routes local traffic through one account (usually a IS based account) and international through another. A sole 4gb unshaped account could therefore be used primarily where it is most needed - ie internationally and a far cheaper (r150 for 30gb) used for local.

I personally have several machines at home using different operating systems and tasked for different duties so I let each one handle its own connection.

The pc I use for skype and vnc requires unshaped international so it has a Web Africa Prepaid account,
my Xbox360 has another WA prepaid account for gaming,
my laptops use a single Telkom 3gb account (which thanks to their capping policy allows me at least 6gb per month)
and my missus has her own PAYG account that lasts her about 3 months.

Additionally my router is configured to share a IS local account to pick up any slack and make downloading from the local newsgroups easy.
