Sorry Scotty but that is wrong, the Dell laptops support 802.11 b/g, the 'g' supports 54Mbps.

Secondly, Centrino laptops do have better battery life because that's the way the chip was designed. It lasts up to 5-6hours, not the 2.5 hours Scotty stated. HP laptops with the Mobile Pentium 4-M has bad life, lasting only about 2.5-3hours.

Scotty and Woody must accept facts BUT I'm know way taking sides, I'm just trying to clarify a few things.

Finally here's a direct comparison of everything.

No need to run Dell down. In terms of value-for-money (cost of ownership) they beat the competition. As far as technology used in HP, IBM and Dell, there is very little difference. What does stand out for Dell is the reliability of their products, manufacture on order process (cutting out the middle man) and after sales service.
You only need to visit their factory once to realise why they are the leaders in their field when it comes to productivity and keeping costs down!
Being a user of HP, Compaq, Fujitsu, IBM and Dell, my preference is Dell. (That goes for Desktops, Laptops and Servers.)

I promised myself I won't stoop to this level to get involved in this "discussion", but I can't help myself.

I owned a Dell Inspiron 8200, I like black laptops so at the time I went with Dell as the HP machines were too butt ugly. (so shoot me, I like sexy looking laptops). Anyways, machine ran fine until 1 month before the warranty ran out and all of a sudden the the laptop start freezing up when I moved the screen up or down. So I sent it in to Dell and it came back one week later looking like a 5 year old machine with the "whatyoucallit" outside plastic panelling loose and the one PCMCIA dock only working 10% of the time. I was pissed and complaint, they apologised and said they'll send me a gift voucher WHICH I NEVER GOT!

I won't say that all Dell laptops sucks, my experience was probably very isolated, but I had enough, I did the obvious - sold it on Ebay and replaced it with a sexier and lighter IBM thinkpad T41, what a beauty!

We have three makes of laptops in our company: Dell, Mecer and HP/Compaq

The Dell laptop gave ENDLESS troubles until it was chucked into a cupboard and replaced by an HP. The Mecer didn't last long either and has ended up in the same cupboard!

Now the entire company uses HP/Compaq laptops and we do not have ONE problem - out of 10 HP laptops - not one complaint.

I would definately vote for HP above Dell, for sure. But that's just my opinion.

Yes but the moderators can lock the thread.

For the most part, laptops are buggy, irritating and underpowered.

I just got myself a second hand one for R2000 just for client meetings. Perfectly good enough for me to show websites and some multimedia flash stuff. Even loaded linux on the sucker. It's an old Acer celeron Travelmate 202T - ugly and black, but light and does just what I need it to.
If I ever decide I'm mad enough to spend a small fortune on a better laptop, I can flog it for R1500.

The thought of spending R13000 on a laptop makes me feel ill - damn ripoff !
Imagine the desktop PC you could build for that much money !

Ya, But who the hell would want a huge desktop when you can get a laptop, apart from you.
Desktops are unportable, and restricting as you have to stay in the same place when using it. Especially for those hardcore gamers out there, who have to lug their huge desktop around with them. How impracticle!
