We have a really nice slow and reliable HP 6MP laserjet, which we have been running off an old Toshiba for years

Toshiba gets fried, so we get a new Sony Vaio. Without a parallel port!

I have plugged in a USB to parallel cable, but cannot get it to print, even tho' the pc has the driver in win xp, The jobs queues, but don't print

Help!!
Anyone??

USB to Parallel port adapters are not particularly effective, and often don't work properly.

I'd suggest finding an older PC motherboard with a real parallel port, or an old laptop. e.g. Dell D600 series should do. Alternatively, I have a docking station for the Dell D series laptops that has a parallel port built in to it, which might be another option.

The parallel/usb converters do not work with all printers.

From experience I have seen it with 2 printers, perhaps your's is another.

Also there are more than one type. One is an adaptor only, the other is a adaptor with a piece of cable. (bad descriptions, posting from phone). Some printers won't work with the one but will work with the other, where other work with either.

If your Vaio has an ExpressCard slot then you can purchase a cheap parallel port card for ~$13 from www.dx.com (includes free shipping). Otherwise a cheap ethernet to parallel port printer server might fit the bill. There are also wireless versions available. Personally I would not spend more than a few hundred since you can purchase a new laser printer for a few hundred. I recently replaced my old HP 5L with an HP LaserJet 1217nfw and the improvement is tremendous! This new device can scan, fax, copy and print wirelessly - I bought it during the Incredible Connection tradein promotion for R999.

What OS on VAIO?

Sounds like xp but a new sony will have 7 or perhaps even 8 on it so i am confused.

Did you load windows xp on the new laptop? You should load the windows 7 drivers, they should also work on windows 8. Make sure the queue is clear.
