HP webOS made public

Hewlett-Packard said Friday it is making its webOS mobile operating system available to the open source community and changed course on plans to abandon making tablets based on the platform.

Sweet! This is very excellent news!

I have to agree. This is another example of why it is so dificult to predict tech outcomes because the developments are so fluid. This is very good news.

Could be very interesting, a real competitor to android (given a few years)

This is the best news all week. Perhaps we may have a better tablets os not controlled by anyone like android windows and ios

Best thing HP could have done under the circumstances...

But they've plowed almost $4B into the black hole that is WebOS, so it was either kill it or opensource it, as they couldn't get any buyers...

And that's coming from a WebOS junkie - I had 2 Palm Pre's and still have a Palm TouchPad...

So next thing that HP needs to do is code or buy an Android emulator/runtime to get access to the green robot's few hundred k worth of apps...
