The new generation MS is too expensive in my opinion :erm: but maybe some will still find it useful.

Really tempted to get one - Esquire has them at R3,199 ex VAT.

bladebob, any issues with fan noise? Do you use RAID or AHCI? How do you boot from the SSD?

I did a lot of reading over the weekend on the Gen8 as I have zero experience with servers, etc. Selecting SATA AHCI mode in order to use ZFS (instead of using the onboard B120i controller) results in excessive fan noise. Apparently it's been fixed in an update, but with mixed results.

The model i have is now R 4000 +- Inc Vat down from R 6500 Ex Vat
That's insane. You could buy components separately that are much more powerful. The whole point of the Microserver was that it was a really cheap way to get a home server or (as most people seem to use it instead) media player. Now, it's just another overpriced HP product.

My N36L was R1100 which was cheaper than an mITX motherboard then.

So i do not use the onboard RAID and the fan is ok after bootup. Also there is an BIOS Issue where you have to make the changes you want the save them as the user config in the bios to keep them there. Then you can boot off and drive :)

@TJ99 - I do agree but i was reading some of the forms and decided to give it a go and see the performance - I am very happy. So ic an add the other CPU back and use my Xeon for something else.

The only down side is the 1x PCI-E 16x 2 of them would of been much better.

Oh and it is only the shell 2GB RAM ECC, No HDD, No 9.5mm DVD-RW

I'm a bit disappointed in the prices. I am actually looking for a Microserver now to replace my home rig. I think my mmotherboard is giving issues after so many years. And suddenly the prices at Esquire are a bit ridiculous.

Just to let you know that we dropped the price from R4699.00excl to R 3199.00excl in a matter of days as we purchased 500 units for Jan , 500 units for Feb and 500 units for Mar/Apr , unfortunately HP has stopped subsiding these units since last year and we had to commit to a huge quantity and pay upfront for these just to get this discount , if you look around you will find that other distributors are still selling this unit at around R4699.00 excl vat.

This pricing is honestly not bad otherwise we would not have sold 373 unit since Monday. If you holding out to get those N54L at the sub 1.5k mark , it not going to happen as those unit are already EOL
