Hi,

Apparently these are no longer produced and are being replace by the N54L.

However the N54L seems to be about double the price (R4429 EX VAT on the quote I just received) of the older N40L (which used to be around R1500).

Any ideas if this is true and if anyone still has stock of the older N40L?

Any input on the N54L pricing?

Thanks,
J

Do you guys know what video outputs this new N54L has?
I see the chipset has an AMD HD4200 GPU, which supports H.264 decoding and the CPU is also a lot faster (2.2GHz vs the N40L which is 1.4GHz). This would mean that you won't need a dedicated graphics card any more if it has an HDMI output!

Nope, still only 15 pin d-sub.

so the processor is faster. is that an adequate change to explain the price increase?

It's about 40% faster, which opens up the microserver to a whole new market of potential buyers. Since demand is going to increase, and I assume there's no new manufacturing capacity, the price naturally would go up.

I still think it's a bargain though, it's now capable of transcoding, which makes it a great server for something like Plex. ( Which you can run at the same time as XBMC )

In the R2300 price range, I'd rather just build an HTPC with:
Intel Pentium G2020 CPU @ ~R620
MSI H61M-P31 (micro-ATX) motherboard @ ~R500
Coolermaster RC 344 micro-ATX case @ ~ R450
Corsair VS350 PSU @ ~R450
4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM @ ~R250
Total: ~R2300

With this build you'll have a stronger and efficient CPU, DVI output + audio output and 1080p video playback capabilities and 4GB of RAM! I didn't include a HDD, because you'll most likely just chuck away the 250GB away for like 4x 3TB in any case!

Unfortunately this motherboard does not have a 5th SATA port that you can use for a DVD drive to install your OS from, and the case is quite a bit bigger than the HP one.

The N54L's CPU actually offers better performance than the AMD E350 build, which would cost roughly the same (when going for the Coolermaster Elite 120 mini-ITX case): http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Turion-II-Neo-N54L-vs-AMD-E-350
The E350 build would give you HDMI + DVI and audio outputs, which the N54L doesn't have.

Elaborate.. Running Plex on my n40L and I can now play 1080p media when using a Roku box. PS3 and Xbox had massive buffer issues.

N54L on special at esquire.

Good News from Dubai , Check the special on the N54L again we have managed to drop the price even further as we just committed to take another 1000 units for next week

If you still seeing the R1799.00 please refresh the page as the pricing is lower

That's probably because the Roku box can do direct play, while the PS3 and Xbox needed transcoding.

I'd be surprised if the N40L can transcode 1080p on the fly
