I have had a HP Pavillion DV6000 series notebook for 3 years. All of a sudden the USB ports have stopped functioning - whenever I insert any USB device, the taskbar gives a "usb device not recognised" alert. I have reloaded the operating system (XP) and installed all of the drivers but I still get the same error and I cannot use any USB device on the laptop

Anyone experienced this? It must be hardware but the USB's still supply power as flash disks light up - the laptop just can't use any devices.

Someone on a googled article mentioned dropping the ports to USB 1.1 down from 2.0 and they should work again. But the BIOS only had boot options - nowhere to configure anything else.

Thought appreciated.....

you are going to hate me for saying this:

the DV6 & DV6000 series laptops have bad motherboards. You are fortunate that yours has lasted so long. I've had many clients that had them. The laptops died shortly after the warrantees expire.

You would probably need to try find someone that can attempt a port repair or replace the mainboard. Alternatively replace the laptop.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I've never heard of this fault before. I know the old HP's had problems, but that was mainly graphics card overheating and lifting.

I agree that the motherboards in the DV's are really bad. My first board melted and was replaced by HP under a recall they had out. Now I have this to deal with. I am really surprised at how poor the quality has been with this notebook!!

I am going to buy that PCMCIA USB card so that I can at least get some more life out of the notebook.

I googled the fault and noticed plenty of guys in the states have received the same USB problems

One thing is for sure - I would be loathe to buy HP again after the trouble's this thing has given me and I haven't even used it for work or travel - it really has had an easy life!

Try shutting down, remove the power and battery, leave for 30 minutes and start up. I know it sounds stupid, but it solved a similar problem I had on my HP notebook a few weeks ago. The USB ports would power up accesories, but nothing more. Working fine since.

Hey... my own personal story...

My 13 month old nx7010 in 2004 (R15,500 machine new back then) did the same thing. All USB ports just did the same things you describe.
Overnight and without warning. USB failed... device unrecognised errors.
Tried everything, including putting in the original hard drive.
Nothing worked.

HP took it in for repairs (a story in itself) and quoted R7500 on a replacement board.
The motherboard needed replacement and had failed.
Just like that. Sommer so.

Bad news I'm afraid, but it sounds like mine. Brace yourself for;

1. HP's turn-around time for repairs or replacement components.
2. HP's complete lack of equipment support or actual knowledge.
3. HP's black hole of communication.
4. HP's quote for out of warranty repair.
5. HP's rejection of quote fee.

I accepted the quote and the only thing that saved me was having 3 (THREE) new replacement boards fail right in front of my eyes as the onsite technician repaired the laptop. One after the other brand new, sealed, imported. quality assured, tested and passed motherbaord, ALL faulty. All from HP. the last one having the same USB problem as my original. It took 6 weeks for them to repair and cost me nothing eventually... and that notebook lasted 5 years!

EDIT: It depends which model HP you purchase... their notebook workstation and Elitebook ranges are rock solid, whilst their pavillion DV and 5xx models all seemed to be plagued by failures... I still purchased another nx7010 which also lasted around 5 years and I currently have an 8710p which is 3 years old and not a single problem yet... (typed whilst gripping wood)... sorry man.

EDIT2: And do not discuss the reliability of your HP notebook with Pooky... if you do, your HP notebook will die overnight. Personal experience has proved this to be true!!!

Before you buy a converter card - make sure it's for the correct slot on your laptop.

I have a DV6000 still working just fine, ...for now... admittedly it's had an easy life.

@OP time to buy a new non HP laptop :)

@kayvee: did you have to send yours in for the "screen not turning on" motherboard recall?

I've had and sold a few of these HP Pavillions. Great laptops, really bad life. I'm glad mine died before I started selling them though, as I found out online just how bad they were, so insisted clients took extended warranties.

No, mine was worked faultlessly since I bought it, and still 100%, although every time I turn it on I wonder if this is the time.....

As I said it is not used heavily, so maybe this has something to do with it. I know I will get shyte for it if I sell it, so may as well run it into the ground. I just have been lucky with this one, which makes a change :)

I've also got a DV6000 that's been going well for the last 3 years. Like Kayvee's one mine doesn't get used much so that's probably its saving grace. I'll keep holding thumbs...
