HP ProLiant MicroServer

+1.
Its a quick install as well

Only if nothing goes wrong. I wanted to give OpenELEC a try a few days ago. Created the USB Key with problem, then went off to boot off it. Game me some error about no files found in some or another folder. Did a quick google to see what it could be and just too many generic responses. I just left it.
IMO: Unless it works perfectly rather stick to windows. I have Win7 Ultimate running. Sound over HDMI is perfect (GT210). I rip on the server at the same time it streams with no worries. Mezzmo DLNA Server, Plex Server and Plex Client running great. Everything just works.
Besides, Plex is better! :) / Puts on flame suit...

Hi Mike, I have to agree with you on this - I spent most of yesterday (7.5hrs) trying different solutions on my N40L, from Ubuntu/XMBC to Media Vault to OpenElec and all were problematic as well as very fiddly to set up the way I wanted; so eventually loaded WHS2011 and was setup and completed in 40 minutes...

I will also be trying OpenFiler for my other NAS, as well as a version of Tiny XP x64 for a laugh (Tiny XP works really well as my small server currently through VMWare), as FreeNAS is also a load of rubbish imo.

Currently looking at Plex and will see how that pans out...

I've had success getting ATI cards to do sound over HDMI, I am busy running final testing on my ubuntu install, and should have an image up for public testing tomorrow morning ( Upload speed at home is slow :( )

Will update Nvidia as well by Sunday

Stay tuned :)

You really saying this where the last few posts were about people having issues with Windows? Just asking ;)

It's done :D Drop me a PM if you want a download link and have a 8gb flashdisk that you can spare :)

EDIT:

Scratch that, it feels stable enough to release now :)

1) Download this: http://mediahog.co.za/firmwares/MH_MASTER_0.8.2.7z
2) Extract it with 7-Zip ( Will take about 8gb of space )
3) Download and extract this: http://mediahog.co.za/firmwares/USBIT.7z
4) Run the app included in the second archive, point it at the extracted firmware and tell it to "Restore" to the flashdisk( Has to be 8GB or more, will not work on smaller flashdrives currently ).
5) Put the flashdisk into the microserver's internal port, turn it on and it should boot straight

Should also work on a PC that has an NVIDIA card, I am working on getting ATI drivers working at the moment.

I developed this to work on my N36L microserver, but can confirm that it works 100% on the N40L as well, tested with an NVIDIA GT520 card ( gigabyte )

Please PM me problems, I don't often check this thread :)

Also working on:

-New SuperSport plugin that will initially only be available with this firmware package ( For release when it's 100% stable )
-ATI Compatability
-Auto detection of internal storage ( May or may not work at the moment, ZFS being particularly fun )
-Installing XBMC Eden when released

AMD version is working, expect a handful of bugs, but it should boot right into XBMC Eden, and output sound by the HDMI port.

Note: This is currently ONLY for AMD cards, use the older version for now if you're running Nvidia.

Also: Woo! I've got 50 live systems using the older firmware, no major bugs to report so far :)

I am really impressed with your perseverance. This is what makes Open source great. (People like you)

I am currently running a file server (HP Microserver ) and a HTPC (e6600 dual core with XBMC) on my network and wanted to make the Microserver to do everything.

I ran a couple of tests this morning, hooked up the micro server to my Sony Bravia via the onboard VGA and a USB sound card.
The onboard VGA was capable of playing everything smoothly until I played 1080 mkv file and it battled - I only have one 1080 file so not sure if it's file or the system can't process it.

Is there other advantages of getting a dedicated GFX card over the onboard, picture quality ?
HDMI cable will give me access to a higher resolution on the TV.

I was thinking of getting
MSI AMD Radeon HD 5450 PCI-Express x16 2.1 - GDDR3 1GB - 64-Bit
http://www.takealot.com/electronics...-pci-express-x16-2-1-gddr3-1gb-64-bit,9757412
Will this card fit into microserver ? can't find a definite answer on the net.

I currently watch DSTV on XBMC using a combination of (TV Card, media portal TV server, and XBMC PVR edition) does anybody have experience of doing this but with a USB TV card ?

The heatsink on that card is not too high, it should fit. Does it ship with a low profile bracket?

Thanks :)

I've had six downloads of that file since I published it, but not one comment on how it runs - But I am doing this mostly for my own entertainment systems, so feedback is only for if the community wants improvements that I haven't thought about.

I see openelec 2.0 beta 1 has been released.

Thanks, I just downloaded it now...

On Saturday I wanted to try out XBMC Eden so I checked and the openelec site and only saw the old version, so I downloaded xbmcbuntu and wasted alot of time downloading (over 600mb) and then 30mins to install

With openelec its much quicker and simpler to install..

Thanks

Thanks!

has anyone tested yet? My OpenELEC is installed on a 2TB drive so i'm gonna need to backup and format i guess :D

I'm running it. The upgrade process is really simple. You just unzip the distribution and drop the KERNEL and SYSTEM files from the target directory into the upgrade samba share, then reboot. They do recommend taking a copy of /storage/.xbmc though.

awesome
gonna try it out later

Found a bug with the beta. Sabnzbd and sick beard don't start automatically. There is a workaround on the openelec forum though.

Where do I find the "upgrade" folder... I'm browsing the shares but don't see any "upgrade" folder...

I have my xbmc install running on a flash drive..

Not sure. It was a root level share on \\openelec for me.

ok im having abit of a problem
im running openelec witht the refocus skin
i wanted to see what minimize in the exit menu does

now when i start up i get a tiny window in the corner of the tv
it just hangs, sometimes in the splashscreen or in the main menu

any ideas on how to restore/ maximise?

im thinking i should probabaly just install a clean beta 2...

whats the difference between non-pvr and pvr? will either work on the hp?
