HP ProLiant MicroServer

Can you connect a USB HDD to the internal USB port? I know that USB flash drives work. Reason I ask is I have a Western Digital 2.5" 1TB that has a broken case, there is no SATA connections (USB controller soldered on) so would like to stick that in the N40L somehow when I get it on Thursday.

I run a laptop HDD into the internal USB port via a stripped enclosure. Works just fine.

Just got my HP Microserver :D Hmm I was wondering for the 2.5" HDD, can one remove the non-hot plug HDD bays and buy a 2.5" to 3.5" rail? Are the screw holes correct?

I also removed the 2GB ECC ram and installed a 4GB non-ECC module. Can one mix these two? If not, anyone wanna buy the 2GB stick off me? :D

I have mixed ECC and non RAM with no problems

It's never a good idea to mix ECC and non-ECC RAM. Some machines won't boot with mixed RAM and those that do it can cause system instability. YMMV.

My converter tray, did not work as the ports did not align at the back. In the end, I moved the 2.5 hdd between the HDD cage and the optical drive, and used the eSata port at the back for the 2.5 drive. Just battled to get a correct sata cable. Ended up importing one from Dealextreme.

I won't actually use the ports in the bay. The 2.5" 1TB I have has the USB port soldered on so would just use it to mount the HDD and run to the internal USB port. Alternatively, thinking of just sticking the drive somewhere with double sided tape (not sure if that's safe though).

Ordered a Sapphire HD5450 1GB 64bit with LP bracket. Hmm now just for control options for XBMC:

Logitech MK260/320 - ~R300
Cideko Wireless Air Keyboard/Mouse - ~R400
Logitech Harmony 300 + IR receiver - ~R200 + ~R???
Hauppauge Remote Control for MCE - ~R280
Esquire Mini Wireless KB (currently OOS) - R350

What are your guys thoughts? What are you using and what works best for XBMC? Thinking the Logitech Harmony route might be best, but finding a cheaper USB IR receiver under R100 is posing to be a problem (like many people in this thread). Thinking about this one for the USB IR Receiver: http://www.zapsonline.com/multimedi...ia-centre-ir-reciever-and-remote-control.html

Ok, so after hasseling with this damn thing for hours today, I manage to get XP installed only to find that there are NO XP drivers for the thing

FFS what a waste of time.

I managed to get the micro server working perfectly with xp. Running 3 of them with xp and drivers. Can do a driver backup and upload for you.

Looks like an option as well! Wish the wiki was updated with some information regarding IR Receivers >< Think for now I might get the Hauppauge kit and then a Logitech Harmony 300/600 when I can afford it. After that a wireless KB with touchpad. My mind is changing every second though - unsure of what route to go on a budget

My 2c...

I started with a cheap remote and receiver from BiosOnline (R70). It was too limited for me.
Then I got the mini keyboard and trackball from Esquire for R200. The trackball is almost unusable.
Then I ordered a HP remote and receiver from eBay for $20. This works great, except I cannot control my DSTV with it.
Then I got a Logitech Harmon 650. This works for everything, but lacks a bit of functionality for Xbmc and for my TV.

For now, I am happy wit the HP media smart remote, until I can find a easy way to program the missing info into my Harmony.

My 2.5" just stayed in place. Admittedly it isn't intended as a permanent fixture.

Try the iSonic remote and receiver (about R130 including delivery), it works out the box. However I have yet to try with a Harmony, yet.

Figured out what to do with my spare HPMS.

FreeNAS, 5 * 2TB HDDs, Raid Z1.

Getting full gigabit read/write speeds across the network. Awesomeness. Average around 96MB/s.

Only prob is the HP onboard nic stalls for a few seconds every minute or so, so putting in an Intel one just now and disabling the onboard. Common problem with these servers apparently.

EDIT: Tried a new nic and no change. Actually felt a bit worse. Anyone ever experience those frequent nic resets when under load on their MS?

Interesting, I followed a similar path and settled on the Harmony. What functions are you missing? From what I can see they are all there, just not where you may expect to find them. It takes a bit of adjustment but it was some of the better tech money I have spent.

@squirrel: Loot currently has a special on the Harmony 300i if you can't find it cheaper elsewhere ...

Holy hell that's cheap. The 600 is R200 as well!

EDIT: OK, bought and paid for the 600 :D Now for the receiver.. would something like this work by any chance with a Logitech Harmony and XBMC? Potentially worth a try, since they so cheap. I see someone asked if he would sell just a receiver, and he said yes for R55. What you guys think?

I experienced exactly the same thing - my configuration is a little bit different (I'm running FreeNAS ontop of ESXi) - noticed that my onboard NIC was not always negotiating the full 1Gb and would sometimes even sync at 10mb. Tried to find a cheap PCI-e NIC, it wasn't compatible with ESXi and ended up buying an Intel e1000e NIC, which exhibited exactly the same problem.

The solution was to bond the NICs using ESXi (its not called bonding, I can't remember the terminology used, but thats effectively what it is) and I've found the box to be very stable, albeit the issue still persists although it has much less of an impact on day-to-day operations.

If the receiver is similar to this one on DX then this may be of interest ...
