HP ProLiant MicroServer

I have xbmc on my proliant for the longest time
it's connected to yamaha via hdmi and then to the TV so don't know why you saying it's not optimal

I don't mean it that way. A previous poster asked why some used the raspberry pi instead of connecting it direct to a microserver. I say it could not be optimal for them to have it in their lounge. For me as a South African my first consideration is loss through theft. For a device that is a file server I would have it and a ups hidden away on a very safe area that won't be targetted by thieves - the attic. In a spate of house breakings on my bosses road the thieves took the security DVRs as well by following the trail of cables. Therefore I connect via WiFi to the raspberry pi which runs XBMC - currently with a oldish laptop serving the files. And it was very easy to connect to a second LCD in a different room without worrying about cables.

You still have just over an hour to go to place your orders on the HP Proliant servers @R1399.00 Online only , the price after midnight will go back to normal pricing even with the new shipment arriving the price will not be this low as we used our marketing funds to bring the price down

The Gigabyte VGA card stk#GV-N210D3-1GI is also now uploaded to the online site , It might say no stock (we have over 700 units in stock) as the server is busy updating but you can place orders for them

Have a great weekend and once again thank you for your support

Going home now

Regards
ESQ

Just managed to get my order in for one of these N54L's

I have two N40L's, but I'd like to be able to add more memory.
It's gonna be lakka...

Also going to pick up a few 4TB's from Dion Wired on special for R2000.
http://www.dionwired.co.za/wd-my-book-4tb-hdd.html

That should bump up my capacity nicely...

Can anyone confirm that they are the standard SATA types for when I remove them from the casing?

Hi, sorry to bother and I know I'm asking a lot but could you please send me (or post it in here) some screenshots of your setup screen(s)? More specifically your sound settings.

Xbmc 12.1 on my microserver with radeon 6450 gpu connecting straight to tv works perfectly but the moment I connect it to the Yamaha I get choppy playback. I have a suspicion it has something to do with the pass through settings but no matter what I try playback remains unusable :(

also check your out put on xbmc is it using the wasapi out put?

So nobody can help us simple folk with the slow loading of thumbnails or artwork in Openelec?

If i plan to use the HP as a server, and the Raspberry Pi as the Multimedia player, what would you guys recommend on the software side? Windows Home Server Or Ubuntu for the HP? I'm not that lekker with the Linux side of things..

Use Windows. It will work just fine but a little heavier then Linux.

Thanks Pho3nix! Home server 2011? Does anybody have preferences on what version of XBMC to run on the Pi? I have it on Openelec at the moment.

Run the latest version of XBMC, or look at Rasplex, found I preferred the interface compared to the Raspbmc interface.

Thanks ... it's a 767 but for the life of me can't figure out pass through. If I remember correctly I don't think I'm using the wasapi setting. Will play again over the weekend when I'm back home.

They saw your post
Now: R2,300.00 :(

Just a random question. I'm not going to read through the entire thread. The N54L has a 150W PSU. Does this mean it constantly runs at 150W or does it run "up to" 150W? Can it run at, say 50W if only 50W of power is needed?

I'm currently running Ubuntu Server on my N36L, and have just purchased a N54L and want to put WHS2011 on there so that at least I can walk my mom through the troubleshooting when I'm not home ... plus I have been struggling to debug some issues on the Ubuntu Server, such as why 1 hard drive in my raid partition is no longer included.

I currently have the following running as background services: SickBeard, SABNZBD+, CouchPotato, MySQL Server, Apache Web Server (For dev use), FTP Service, SSH Service.

Will I struggle to get any of these on WHS2011 ... will I be missing anything?

Also, what I love about my Linux box is that it can stay on for weeks, in fact, I never switch it on and off ... except when something goes wrong from a power failure or I install something requiring restart. Is WHS2011 the same ... or is it like normal Windows and needs a restart every now and again?

I run my WHS2011 as a headless box, only rebooted when I'm fiddling around ...

The draw is as much as is needed, with a max of 150W

I cant comment on the setup and if it will work in WHS2011. I can tell you that WHS2011 is built on the 2008R2 kernel though so is far more stable than a normal desktop windows.
Nothing is as stable as linux, I have over 100 servers I manage. 30% are 2008R2 and 70% linux, the linux machines require far less reboots are are more efficient with the same spec hardware.
I have a N54L running WHS2011 and its perfectly fine so use what suits your needs best.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to know I can run it as a headless server. I think I will go test it out, cause I'm running the OS off the internal USB port. Will windows fit on a 16GB Flash Drive without issues? Then I'll just swap out the USB's as a I need depending in the OS I feel like :P
