Hi,

No access to an Axiz pricelist at this point in time, but is Axiz CPT selling these for R899? Can someone confirm pricing.

Already own two, want more!

Thanks and Regards,
J

I've got a dBm meter if you need it, but I suspect you're already within the limits. What are your local regulations? Levels/times?

Thanks - I've got a PC based one for measuring room response.

Here's the document relating to noise control: http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/CityH...oise Control Regulations - PN 627 of 1998.pdf

Its apparently 7dB above ambient noise levels (apparently difficult to measure)

Also, because I have offered to replace the window seals where his windows are vibrating, apparently I've done my part in attempting to resolve his problem.

You guys have probably read this review of discrete HTPC cards over at Anandtech but Jannie it makes for some interesting reading regarding what card to get for your HTPC when you build it

Excellent article. Unfortunately:
Coming to the business end of the review, it must be quite clear by now that we can't recommend the GT 520 or the AMD 6450 with full confidence.

Guess which 2 cards I bought yesterday....

Run your theatre 24x7 and then claim that's 'ambient' :)

Just purchased:
HP ProLiant MicroServer N36L
Sapphire HD6450
Compro MCE remote
Samsung 2TB drive
Samsung DVD-RW drive
Kingston DDR3 RAM

Wish me luck for installation :)

Oh, and a D-Link 5-port Gigabit switch... 100mbit on my wifi router is too slow for file transfers from my rig...

@Postman, what is the best setup you've experienced with these boxes?

Have had no complaints with Sapphire HD5450 and Corsair DDR3 RAM (4GB DIMMs). Only the Linux support seems iffy. Some people say they have no problems in Linux though (XBMC Live).

Thanx for all the info so far ... I think I've settled on going the Sapphire HD6450 route but I'm a bit dubious about using a passive heatsink inside such a cramped space. If you are using one of these cards, are you happy with the temps inside the box?

I'm leaning more towards the 512mb DDR5 version ... I realize it's more expensive and DDR5 isn't really useful for a HTPC but it's the only one with an active fan. Will it fit? I assume it would include the LP brackets by looking at the pictures on the website but could anyone confirm this please?

Much appreciated!

Who stole the LP bracket from the cookie jar?

There are several pages of posts which detail which cards actually fit. I am happy with the temps of my HD5450 (not sure if active or passive, must ask PostmanPot)

Well that sucks!

Thanks ... I think I've got the "which card will fit" portion almost down to a tee after reading all 32 pages of info but I didn't see anything mentioned regarding the DDR5 version specifically (yes Friday afternoon's are pretty quiet in these parts of the world and I could have missed it in my sleepy state of mind :p)

You don't know whether your card is active or passive ??? Never opened the box after purchase?

It's bleak that I don't have the LP bracket but not really worried. Drill will sort it out.

IDOL if you're around perhaps we could update the Opening post to include some of the important part of thead what cards fit linux problems with certain ATI cards what network cards fit links to other HP MS owners threads, if you'd like I can try compile some of it and PM it to you?

If this is a crap suggestion bring the flames....:p

I installed it and forgot. Can't ssh in and check for you, otherwise I would have.

Hi Guys,

I've got one of these boxes at home. Debian Linux and ZFS for the raidz config. Running Raidz1 and loving it.

Now I would like to tell my work to get one of them as the D2D device we work with is flakey and replacement drives are R3.5k (one just died and i'd rather buy this Proliant and run ZFS (so much better than normal raid).

Would you think this would be fine? Organizations data is 300GB atm. I'd like to run 4x 2TB drives with Raidz2 (2 drive parity) as this will leave me safe for on-site backups. I then will install Sparkleshare for the online backups to a server or go with something commercial like SpiderOak.

Any input on this?

Edit: Also anyone have a walkthrough on how you added another 2x drives in your optical bay - how did you make the modifications?

Thanks
J

no SE, was thinking the same thing. some people just don't want to read through all the pages to find 1 little bit of info and so an OP post with as much info as possible would be cool.

as you say: something like confirmed cards, confirmed setups in regard to HTPC/NAS and confirmed issues with certain mix of components.

OK, some feedback.

Ordered 2 of these boxes last week before I knew I could get them from Postmanpat. From now on will buy from him.

1st one set up as a dedicated NAS with 4x2TB drives running unRAID.

2nd one was to experiment with as a XBMC player and here the fun and games started with finding the correct graphics card that's low profile, draws less than 25W, fits into the space available and is as powerful as possible.

Eventually bought a Sapphire 6450 1GB (LP, passively cooled, fits easily but no LP bracket) as I could not find a Nvidia card (either a 210 or 520). Just as I got home today at 5, Jacques from ACT Link phoned to say he got me a MSi N520GT and even brought it over to my house. Owe him one. The card is actively cooled, fits perfectly and comes with a LP bracket. All lekker.

Installed the card, 4GB of RAM, removed all the hard-drives and installed XBMCLive to a small USB stick plugged directly into the Mobo.

First problem; XBMCLive does not know the 520. Download the 520 Linux drivers from Nvidia, install and now HDMI video works fine.

Second problem; No audio. Fiddle a bit, but not much. Give up, too much red wine by now.

Download and install generic openelec onto another USB stick and it all works 'out-of-the-box'. So, right now, I'm using openelec and it's looking good.

Playing the reference 1080p 264 Avatar shows slight issues with playback but not so much that I want to slit my wrists.

If I can find one of my Win-7 disks, I'll install Win-7 onto the internal drive and test like that, but right now I'll test for a while as a clean openelec install.

I'll probably convert this to another NAS at some point and build a more powerful, dedicated XBMC player.

Update, on the update:

I'm upgrading my view on the HP MS as an XBMC player from mildly disappointed to fairly optimistic.

Mostly due to info from the HTPC GPU shootout posted above that explained frame rates, etc. quite well.

Turns out most of the artifacts I saw on high bitrate files were caused by the movie and TV frame rates not matching up. Setting the GPU to match the TV smoothed most, if not all, the 'jitter' out.
