HP ProLiant MicroServer

Hi,

I am looking for some help in setting up XBMC (running on openelec), sickbeard, etc correctly on my Microserver. Also want it to sync with my PC so that i can browse and copy file between them.

As a newbie i have tried doing this myself but have really battled so am reaching out in the hope that perhaps somebody can assist and give me the XBMC experience that is possible on my microserver.

Am in the Midrand area so PM if you think you can help.

I won't be able to help but I will say that I started with openelec and switched to win7 install with xbmc. I just had too many difficulties with openelec personally.

I'm going the same route. Mostly because it's much easier to manage my movie collection (on a file level) from within Windows 7.

Yeah I made a real pain of myself on the forums trying to troubleshoot all the issues I was having with her no real success.

What I like about Openelec is that it allows the server to boot straight into XBMC immediately. I guess that would go with a Win7 install?

On the other hand I could get Plex up and running at the same time so that sharing across other devices (Local and remote) becomes a very good option to have.

I know a lot of guys are pushing the win7 install. Openelec was an absolute breeze for me and the install now takes me about 15 minutes including hardware install.

On holiday, so can't really type up a quick start guide.

The life hacker guides are pretty good.

Make sure your media (tv shows, movies) are media server ready. See life hacker. In general the life hacker guides good.

With regards to accessing the server over WiFi, there are a few things you need to do first. Make sure everything is enabled under setup, services. Username is xbmc, password leave blank. Make sure you have a static IP. Easiest way is under the openelec settings menu e.g. 192.168.0.199 (depends on your router ip range, the last digits are the ones you're setting, you can see current up under system, system info)

In Windows ensure your sharing settings are enabled. Hit the Windows key and type network sharing.

Then you should be able to go to run, and type \\192.168.0.198 hit enter and browse to the server

Sabnzbd suite is under the addons menu which is on an unofficial repository on the latest version. You have to manually install the repository from a zip file. Google about it. Then there are lots of guides on setup. Your nzb indexes/sites, search this forum. Same for news servers and their addresses. You'll want a paid server as backup (I use a once off astraweb account)

On an advanced level you can get the watched status to sync across installations using the addon trakt. Which is easier than dealing with sql.

My Swype is not used to this much text. So that's it for now.

Just done Ubuntu install with plex. Took a bit of fiddling, mostly to mount the drives, but happy with the result. Streaming to smart tv and phones so far. Next step is a shared backup file for the laptops.

For that price I'd rather build a pc

Exactly.. I think 1.3-2.5k is the sweet spot for micro servers. Over that value it begs the question of going the micro-atx route which will give greater flexibility

Not to mention HP's absurd pricing for microserver service parts

Anyone know of any deals on the microserver at the moment? I can only find it at ridiculous prices right now. By ridiculous I mean around R6k...

Esquire have the N54L on their website for R1499 excl. VAT but there's no stock available. Maybe you should PM the Esquire rep or phone them to confirm. Might be worth your while.

Pcint has them at R1594 incl, not sure if they have stock though.

Inflation:-(

Not too sure about that. Seems a few stores are just milking their customers or have awful currency hedging in place. There is a serious variance in pricing between stores and if it's all down to USD currency rates then they need to get their purchasing acts in order...
