HP ProLiant MicroServer

Hello All

Just wanted to let you know that we just received some HP Proliant N54L MicroServers in today , these are the 2GB with 250gb HDD version , we also received the a few of the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 series , these items that came in are not at those low pricing anymore as HP has withdrawn the marketing and rebate support on these products. –We still engaging with them to see if we can place an order for 5000 units to get a better price like we did last year.

wish we could have done better on the pricing but this is the best pricing at the moment and could only get 300 units of the N54L and 20 of the Gen8 Series

Why don't you guys get in contact with dell? They have a Dell PowerEdge T20 on sale for $250 now (beats HP's new support policies). From what I can see, its quiet a cool system (even had usb3 ports, and 4 ram slots). They have the Xeon one sale for $499 as well...

Maybe a few people will be interested in this?

Just a suggestion...

Just be careful the noobs are well aware that this gen8 model DOES NOT RUN WINDOWS 7 or any other desktop operating system.

Just like Gen7 does not run XP?

Touche

Have one running XP at the office as our file server and it is bulletproof. Finding the NIC drivers for XP WAS a serious challenge in the beginning though.......

I did this two weeks ago ... but luckily I managed to find all the drivers in the end. Was so proud on the internet as a whole. Did take a few hours though. Got to know what makes the N54L tick beyond what I ever imagined. And yes, XP was rock solid on it. Just sad that I had to forgo the whole setup a mere hour later  when I kinda realized that XP and XBMC 13 does not like each other, and neither does 12.3 for that matter as XP does not support dxva2 to begin with :o - my bad.

No desktop linux at all?

You can use whatever operating system you see fit, whether it be another flavor of Windows or a free alternative like FreeNAS and any number of Linux distributions, but no desktop OSes at all, only server OSes. Necessary drivers are provided for:

Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Essential Business
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Foundation Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 W32
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64
Microsoft Windows Server 2012
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard and Essentials
Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2008 R2
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Server (x86)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Server (x86-64)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (AMD64/EM64T)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86)
Ubuntu 12.04
VMware ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere 5.1
VMware vSphere 5.5

So the idea of slapping Windows 7 on this machine for a quick and easy home server does not work. We tried and failed with Windows 7 x64; there are too many non compatible drivers.

So after all these years HP basically went and killed a very nice product?

Well it seems that they are definitely aiming at the small business market with this gen8. It remains to be seen whether they will keep the Nseries around for us home enthusiasts.

Funnily enough, I have 3 of the N series here at home... I actually just ordered the first one for the office today.

The N series also had quiet a price hike... Think I'd have to get myself one more N series though. Can't justify spending 6K + on the next gen items.

From the spec, on the G2020T processor, I wonder if Mac OS X will work. At the price, I am not prepared to try it but I have a feeling that with a little tinkering, it can...

A friend wants a NL54 after seeing my setup, where's the best price and who will have stock for one nowadays?
