I think I should have confirmed about a LP bracket for my HD6450. Running perfectly with only one problem. My videos freezes occasionally and sometimes often. Found it's the same problem with XBMC as it is with WMP.

Does the HD6450 use more than 25w of power as stipulated by HP? Wondering if I shouldn't underclock the card to try make it draw less power under load when playing videos. Problem is, it freezes with any video. HD or SD

On another note, looks like I will be buying new drives. Already run out of space on the 2TB I have in there just with ripping my personal DVD collection.

what would the size of the video be stroebs?

Win7?

I will install it on mine as well and see if it does the same problem.

from what I gather, the main "culprit" is the low 25W ? assigned to the pci-e slot.

for those of you that know how this would work: say you have the pci-e slot with assigned 25W, but a card that draws more power...
now the card has it's own independent 6-pin power connection... would that 'nullify' the power draw from the pci-e slot as it is connected directly to the power supply? (hope I put the question right)

okAY I am sold on this. I cant see anything better for NAS around for same price. I will turn it into media player later. But what is the best os to use for NAS, or should already use os that would be fit for media centre?

Have a look at freenas 7, not 8 which is the latest. You can also just install Ubuntu. Both options works lekker ;)

Win7, XBMC 10.1, Standard specs of the PC excepting the HDD.

Video size varies from 480p to 720p to 1080p. All have the same problem. Have loaded new codec pack so will see what come of it tonight

I think the cards with a molex/PEG power socket would still draw power from the PCI-E slot, before attempting to draw power directly from the PSU via the power socket - but I might be wrong - and I hope I'm wrong too ;)

I think the max power consumption is only reached when gaming. I've got the 5450, also Sapphire, and mine works perfectly in Win7, and the 6450 uses a little less power than the 5450.

Have you looked at other options such as the card's seating?
You may also just have a bad card, don't know about anyone else with problems using a 6450 or 5450.

If any card should have a problem it would rather be the GT210, uses more power than the ATi cards..

I'm fairly sure it's a software issue as the card worked wonderfully while playing a game or two when I first got it.

So i am still deciding on what Graphics card to use.

Will the 5450 work fine out of the box when running XBMC - Live?

Not in Linux, no. Will need a bit of tweaking. For an out the box solution, get Nvidia.

No, it works with video up to 720p , but apparently cbrunsdonza got it working, see SomeoneEls's post above.

yeti uses his to play 1080p.

6450 uses more power, or at least has a higher TDP.

How sure are you?
Even after I read through multiple other N36L threads on other forums, I only ever saw posts about ATi not working in XBMC Live / Linux with 1080p

Maybe we should get Yeti to reply to this.

Quite sure, as we are friends IRL and he has 1080p media and I don't ever remember him saying he can't play 1080p.

Gtalking him now.

Seriously? First time I've heard of people not being able to play 1080p with the HD5450, and I'm always reading the latest replies here.

yeti says that since he uses ESXi/VM's he doesn't use his HD5450 much. However he says he can run 1080p in Linux (non-XBMC Live).

cbrunsdonza was able to get the 5450 working with XBMC Live - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-MicroServer?p=6552734&viewfull=1#post6552734 http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-MicroServer?p=6582590&highlight=#post6582590 - although I'm not sure if he ever commented on 1080p stuff.

Nope cbrunsdonza only tested with a 1.4GB file. We also managed to get 720p working in XBMC Live / Linux. It's the 1080p that's evasive.
My 5450 works perfectly with Windows and XBMC for Windows.

Sorry, did not realise it was a specific issue with XBMC Live. Bummer!

XBMC Live and XBMC under Linux, you need to enable hardware accelerated video decoding through something called VAAPI, which seems to be very difficult to get working correctly in Linux or XBMC Live.

I don't have a proliant microserver, but I was able to get my ATI HD5450 working in Kubuntu simply by installing the additional drivers provided in the menus. Once I rebooted, everything worked and I was able to watch Avatar in 1080p via XBMC on my 40 inch LCD over HDMI.
