HP ProLiant MicroServer

Mother of god, that's quite a lot pricier than current models. I love the dual gigabit lan, pity it looks like ass - hope you can get it in black.

Chrome is the new black ...

BTW, one additional benefit: a [computer] grille that can be used to grill wors ... :)

IMO one of the biggest appeals of the HPMS was the cost. $449 for the base model is insane when compared to the current offering.

I agree: the price has (approximately) doubled. HP is getting greedy ...

I am sure it will come in less than that. The N54L is listed in the HP Store at $389, and look what we have been paying for it in the last month or so, so it should actually end up about 20% more than we were paying for the N54L recently, ROE aside. Hopefully.

IIRC, they have always sold for more in $ terms in the States, it will be interesting to see what they end up going for here. I agree that it is ugly though, I don't think the wife will let one of those in the TV room...

I didn't realise that the RRP was that high ... in that case hopefully only an extra R500 or so

What type of noise Mys? Fan squeal, buzzing, etc.... in most cases it'll probably be the fan gummed up with dust - best would be to remove the PSU from the case first -> with the power unplugged try sticking thin screwdriver into one of the fan exhaust holes to stop the fan blades from turning, then give it a good blast of compressed air; not too much though (and make sure there is no moisture in the air supply)

If out of warranty, maybe open the PSU top and without touching anything inside, try blow the dust off the fan from the inside out. I dab of electrical oil on the fan bearing shaft should do the trick to keep it running quietly for a while.

Very loud buzzing and sounds like the fan is a bit stuck. Do think it is out of warranty so may choose the later option and just strip and clean as this should resolve most of it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

It used to be worth it when you get the excellent NL36 for between R800 and R1300. Now it really is not worth it anymore unless you have money to burn.

I replaced my PSU fan on my NL40 with a papst 412. The fan noise was clearly audible before (whiney, spinning sound). Now I have to really concentrate to hear the server in the room.
