HP ProLiant MicroServer

Relax, those are just RRP's. You are going to see better prices.

Let us know where , I phoned Axiz , Rectron and Frontosa , everyone's price is around R2699 and R2899.00 all excl vat and don't have stock , Esquire in Milnerton is priced atm R2199.00 excl but Graham told me to wait as they bringing out their birthday specials next week

That's not too extreme considering the price I paid recently for my N54l.

Don't forget that the exchange rate is up by close on 50% since last year

Ayone see that special at game?, or is it only at potch?

R2500 for an acer aspire x, only had a quick glance, but it looks like the perfect pc to use as an htpc.

Any details? Specs? Is it in the pamphlet?

Didn`t spend much time looking at it, all I remember is amd athlon X2 220 cpu(i`m not familiar with AMD cpu`s), don`t remember the rest of the specs.
Had a nice little case with all sorts of card readers, and that it has hdmi out,
Thats why I was asking here. The salesman on the floor confirmed the price, said the normal priced was R4000, and that the special is till tuesday. - was at riverwalk in potchefstroom.

looked like this:

Seems like the new Microserver had a proper RAID controller though? Or am I imagining things?

Speaker/sound options?

Hi guys,

Current setup:
N54L with XBMC installed - connected to my TV via HDMI for both audio (internal tv speakers) and video.

I noticed that when I play movies, the action scenes tend to be very, very loud (I have neighbors above me so I dont want it to be to loud) so I turn it down but then I can not hear conversations clearly... :(

I think that external speakers might be a better solution for clear audio.

I am looking for speakers that can connect to my HP N54L or TV.

Problem is that my N54L has no audio out and the TV only has optical out and headphone jack .

Any suggestions? Do I need to break the bank and buy speakers with optical in or can I connect speakers on the headphone jack? Or should rather I get an audio card (perhaps USB sound card)?

How much you looking to spend?

You could just get yourself a set of 2.1 speakers and connect them to the headphone out - that would be the cheapest solution. I am doing something similar as TV speakers don't cut it at all, I've got basically the same setup just with a set of 2.1 PC speakers connected.

Otherwise you could invest in a proper receiver and speakers but then we're talking a lot more moola but also something that is going to last.

If you are viewing by yourself I would consider going head-phones.

What makes this exercise expensive is that a lot of the newer TVs only have optical out which means that the entry price for speakers jumps a lot

Yeah I am looking for a cheapish solution. Thought of getting 2.1 speakers (perhaps Logitech Z323). But I am not sure if plunging these speakers into a headphone jack is such a good idea.

Not always just me.

If I do get speakers with optical in (like Logitech Z906). How will it work? Will the HTPC pass the audio to the TV via HDMI and then the TV pass it on to the speakers via optical out?

I think just plugging other speakers into the same source will leave you with the same problem
I do think you will need a reciever to handle the sound and that can change the levels

See if your tv can do dynamic compression on the audio

Not what I want to hear :( what are receivers going for? at least 2k?

Doesn't look like it.

I agree - hence my recommending head-phones: speakers will only amplify the difference between the lows & the high.

According to Google (search on "automatic volume control software") there is quite a lot of free stuff out there. A compatible sound card with speakers (by-passing the TV) should then do the job.

Just get something with hdmi pass through. I got a soundbar (hw450), which is very overpriced, but now I can hear what people are saying :)

I also have a usb soundcard for when I want to use headphones.
