Thanks for the suggestions, will look into it. I thought my problem could be related to the internal tv speakers...

The range on tv speakers isn't great. As tv's get thinner, speakers get worse as well. Best to invest in a dedicated sound system.

Re sound bars. There's not much online. Best bet is to walk into a Dion wired or similar and buy on price and power output. If you have more than just the xbmc you'll need to consider input/output options.

Btw if you bump up the volume amplification in xbmc you basically push the lower range up (squashing the full range narrower) which might help a bit.

I received and installed my USB3 PCI-e card that I ordered on ebay a few weeks ago:

If you are running cli then you can use fdisk -l to list drives. It should give you something like this:
root@derpsticks:~# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 75.2 GB, 75161927680 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9137 cylinders, total 146800640 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0002c5dd

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 2048 249855 123904 83 Linux

The /dev/sda1 shows that is the partition on the drive. You can then mount that to a directory using: mount /dev/sda1 /directory/name/

The light on the drive doesn't even come on. The syslog also makes no mention of it when plugging it in.

I see there's a power plug on there. Is power needed on there? I don't think the MS has a suitable plug

3.5" external drives need an external power supply.

My Seagate USB-3 adapter / GoFlex drive came with drivers ... ?

Nope. 2.5" external.

The 3TB drives from game are not 2.5" - I thought you referring to those when you said "Got one of those too" in response to a post about them

My bad, I got a similar card, which is not anything inside my HPMS when I plug a 2tb 2.5" WD "My Passport" drive into it

Unsure. Current usb2 ports work fine though

The info on the card purchased by D4N includes the following:

"*Please Note: It is recommended to connect 4-pin Peripheral power connector to power supply to provide adequate power for your high volume, high speed HDD such as 500GB 7200RPM drives."

You have to connect the Molex connector for this particular card, Initially I thought that the cards were faulty since the USB3 card on my main PC also have a Molex connector but it doesn't need external power
