HP ProLiant MicroServer

How much is an HP 54L?

I have the HP 40L and thought it was decent, until I saw a friends Mac Mini i5 running XBMC. I was thinking a used Mac Mini or new 54L due to the speed boost?

I don't think you'll notice a difference between the CPUs of a N40L & N54L. What GPU do you have?

Either a GT610/210 ... I can't remember.

I have an old Q9300 Quad Core 2.5ghz ... maybe I should fix it up and use that?

Windows 7

I tried OpenElec, but I don't know Linux :/ So every change was a huge mission and I eventually changed to Windows

I'm running linux mint which makes life a bit easier but I agree when linux wants to be a pain it can really take a while to get something sorted. I run a N36 as my main MS but also have a N40 and I have had no need to switch to the N40 because xbmc on the N36 is ultra smooth.

Where do you experience slow response?

Or just phone your branch. My account was open within an hour of my call

When I scroll up and down the menus - or go back.

It's not as smooth as it could be.

I didn't pick it up until I saw something smoother and then realised it doesn't quite have the grunt :/ I've got an Asus P5QC board and Q9300 Core 2 Quad 2.5 lying around that I may actually just make my HTPC. It has an SPDIF port as well, which I've been looking for.

I found that the Openelec build I was using caused issues with the database and image cache when after my power tripped a few times, and that caused serious hassles with Openelec being my main HTPC. Required a fresh installation each time to get it sorted, otherwise the menus would be slow and playback could take up to 20 seconds to actually start. Haven't had the same issues on Windows and if I did, reinstalling is far easier as well, as is backing up the database. XBMC has an automated database backup feature but it doesn't delete the previous backup, so you end up with a 20gig folder of backups.

Must admit, I'm far happier on Windows than Openelec, even though I mostly enjoyed my Openelec experience. The nail in Openelec's coffin for me was when the Supersport plugin stopped working and live streaming required a browser...

Someone needs to create a Windows Lite or something that XBMC can run on easily - but people can still operate it without knowing Linux and coding!

Didn't they have a Lite Windows XP?

The only time mine pauses is when I open my movies folder and that’s maybe 1 second.
Did you buy some extra ram ? windows needs a bit extra..

That would be awesome, windows 7 is using 20+ GB of space on my 30GB SSD, and all I need it for is to run XBMC.

Yup - running 4GB.

You ever shutdown?

I notice when I reboot things are better. Maybe a memory issue then?

Ok I have posted this in the XBMC thread but I'm reposting this here as well in the hopes that someone knows what I'm doing wrong here:

Ok so I haven't progressed much since last I posted. I have redownloaded the OPENELEC file and tried to redo the bootable usb drive about 20 times with no success. I have entered my bios settings in the N54L but the usb is already set as the first drive to boot from. When I start up the microserver it gets stuck on "no bootable partition in table". I don't know what I am doing wrong here but I have run out of things to try.
