HP ProLiant MicroServer

Is that some software version of Raid 0? If so, avoid at all cost if you value your data

Why not create a share for each drive and then map the drive on his workstations. I have done this on my media server and each of the 3 drives is shared as SERIES, MOVIES, OTHER respectively.

Yep, this is kind of what I have setup at the moment. Small issue is that each of his respective file types does not fit on the hard drives. They are all different sizes.

I have purchased a Microserver for a client to put all his old hard drives in for storage. At the moment it is running Windows Home Server 2011, however he is having issues locating his files as the drives are not pooled together. Is there a free option to pool all the drives together as one? Alternatively, are there any suggestions for making it easier to read/write over the network?

Why do you not try Amahi? Easy to set up and forget about. I think it is www.amahi.org

You could probably create one shared folder and symlink all the drives into it (windows can do symlinks). I also recall that since windows 7 there was a concept of a "collective" folder for documents etc. where you add folders to be displayed inside that folder.

Hi guys

Wanting to upgrade the stock 2GB RAM of a N54L. I seem to recall the previous model(s) coming with stock ECC RAM?

The N54L appears to be stock non-ECC? So standard DDR3-1333 will work to add to the stock RAM?

I used Kingston Value Ram: works fine ...

Not to worry, one can mix ECC and non-ECC:

The N54L is very similar to the N40L (the only real change is it's a faster Turion CPU). You can mix ECC and non-ECC memory on the N40L/N54L, or just use non-ECC memory.

I have had an N40L running with the original 2GB ECC stick and a non-ECC 4GB stick for a total of 6GB quite happily. I expect that the RAM you have will work fine in the N54L (although as there are only 2 slots you'll need to remove the existing 2GB stick).

When I ordered the box I simply added an additional 2GB of the cheapest Kingston Value Ram that I could find ... :)

Hi guys,

Thinking about taking the plunge with the HP. I currently have a core 2 mac mini with 3 ext HDDs in the study serving Plex to my ps3 in the lounge and soon a Roku in the bedroom. No DSTV and instead have Netflix and Hulu. My router is in the lounge and directly linked to the ps3.

I want to use the HP to become the Plex server, handle my torrents and watch live sports streaming via wiziwig (Acestream) . I have a Harmony 700 just lying in the cupboard which I'd like to incorporate into the system. Want to run Win7 since I don't have server experience nor the inclination for Linux.

In terms of the hardware is there a new HP coming out soon that is worth waiting for? Is 4gb ram sufficient for a smooth running system? Do I just need any low profile vga card? I assume I also need an IR receiver for the Harmony but how do I incorporate it?

The Generation 8's are the "new" ones (Intel based) however they are still rather pricey.

Hi
