HP ProLiant MicroServer

I am running 4TB Seagate HDD on my HP N54L. You have to convert the disk to GPT in order to use the full 4TB.

Unfortunately not helping. I have 4x 4TB WD Red (WD40EFRX as mentioned in the Wiki being supported) and they're not detecting in the BIOS.

Anyone running these drives/4TB drives able to comment/assist?

False alarm. Tested the stock 250GB which wasn't detecting either, so obviously a problem with the bays/SATA connector. Had a close look at the SATA connector on the mobo and the plug was fitting skew and loosely. after some fiddling around it's now connecting properly, and all drives detecting. :)

I swapped an old desktop for a N35L with no HDD bays

Received a qoute from SPL R671.70exVat each

I've got an old N34L with a busted motherboard I'm looking to get rid of. No HDD or RAM, but case, psu still in good condition and has all it's parts. You can also try and fix the motherboard, there is a busted capacitor on it which has been removed (I can provide the rating for the cap). No guarantees its only the capacitor though.

I just bought a Chromecast so would love to recoup that money. If you want it pm me.

Please keep us updated as this looks pretty interesting.

Hi guys,

Thinking about taking the plunge with the HP. I currently have a core 2 mac mini with 3 ext HDDs in the study serving Plex to my ps3 in the lounge and soon a Roku in the bedroom. No DSTV and instead have Netflix and Hulu. My router is in the lounge and directly linked to the ps3.

I want to use the HP to become the Plex server, handle my torrents and watch live sports streaming via wiziwig (Acestream) . I have a Harmony 700 just lying in the cupboard which I'd like to incorporate into the system. Want to run Win7 since I don't have server experience nor the inclination for Linux.

In terms of the hardware is there a new HP coming out soon that is worth waiting for? Is 4gb ram sufficient for a smooth running system? Do I just need any low profile vga card? I assume I also need an IR receiver for the Harmony but how do I incorporate it?

Running Plex maybe a bit hectic for this poor bugger, but a lot of people have done it successfully though.

My micro is purely a NAS and I 'stream' if you want to call it that to all my other devices. Got Windows 2008 server install and it even runs game servers without a problem. So the CPU is not that bad.

For IR receiver, well it's nice to have a keyboard type of remote like the RII. They are a bit pricey, but entirely up to you how far you want to setup the system.

p.s. downloads etc runs nicely and the HP micro is super quiet

Fully agree with you here.

I've mentioned this a few times before and don't recommend the Microserver as a Plex server. In certain cases yes it will be fine but if you have any 1080p content in your library then it's a bad idea. If you are running mobile devices or something like Roku it's a bad idea. If you have more than one device in the household using the server at the same time, it's a bad idea.

It may be able to transcode 720p streams okay but then will leave you with very little headroom to do any other tasks. If you plan on building a Plex server, go with the most powerful thing you can afford, this will give you the juice to do 1080p effortlessly as well as having multiple transcodes going simultaneously. Who knows, the machine may still be around then to be able to transcode 4k streams when it becomes more mainstream.

So, in short: Plex + Microsever = Not the greatest idea.

My HP N40 (the one before the N54L) runs Plex Server perfectly for me. I use a Roku 3 to view the content and never once had a single problem - whether I watch 1080p files or 3D, not once have I had a problem. Granted only one device (the Roku 3) actually access Plex so that could be why it works so well. When the family want to watch, they mainly use Netflix or Hulu so their is never real stress on my HPMS.

+1 - I use mutliple viewing devices but only 1 at a time and the N45L handles Plex pushing perfectly.

If you only have a single device, why not just install OpenELEC on it?
XBMC is much better than Plex, and there is also no transcoding.

Hi all, for those that are interested, I'm selling my MicroServer N54L in the classified section. Must go.

Interesting - tried to get a raid1 array going with the microservers hardware raid, but it apparently has a fakeraid implementation which neither openelec or Ubuntu can handle... Pity
